I had some difficulties getting this to work, so I thought I'd share with the others one thing I at least didn't find in the English instructions (I found it in the German text).
If you use Google Maps, the way to transfer the map information to your Wordpress and XML Google Maps is to save the map to a .kml -file (I guess .kmz works, but I haven't tried it) by using Google Maps 'View in Google Earth' function. For this to be visible, you need to be in edit mode. Then just upload the .kml file to the Wordpress installation and make a link to it from a post. Or use Postie to send it by e-mail as an attachment :).

It works even for other location if your server has set the allow_url_fopen to on!

I guess I just didn't (and still don't :)) quite understand the other (standard?) process, so I thought this was the way to do it. If using Google Maps, and not Google Earth, what is then the easiest (least steps required) way to do it?
I haven't seen any error regarding to allow_url_fopen, as others have reported here.

'View in Google Earth' - that's the only way there, this is correct!
Sorry, my first answer was a bit confusing, this occurs only if you want to access a kml file directly on another webspace (manually upload or use it from another website that google maps or your wordpress uploads).

I find that I can do all this successfully and have a good map.
The only problems is that it doesn't center -- it starts out showing the whole world and the data is only for a small area. The problem can be viewed at at http://www.willbrownsberger.com/index.php/district-maps.
Any suggestions appreciated!

My problem posted above is fully solved.
I was importing KML from http://www.mass.gov/mgis. It wouldn't work, but it did work in Google Earth, so I just traced the polygon that I wanted (only a small portion of what I was importing, anyway) and saved it from Google Earth.
