No answers at all and now I see that this plugin is going “premium” evil strategy and not transparent at all, at least an update to fix this issue would make me consider going premium but such strategies are a no go for me.

Hi, yes. Having same issue since 1.5. For us, we reverted back to 1.4.25 which seems to still work just fine with WP 3.8.2. If you still have the installer, or an FTP backup of your site, you can simply swap out the new version for the original. I just deleted the 1.5 folder and re-uploaded my backup folder of v 1.4.25 and have back the Google News functions *and* no more Google Webmaster tool URLset errors.
I love these guys in Yoastland, but in an effort to build in these new “connect to webmaster tools” and analytics stuff, it seems to have busted some of the “everyday” stuff for news portals.
Your mileage may vary.
(we have various 10 year old news portals, typically 10,000 pages of original content, not counting tags/categories)
