I just updated to 2.5.1 and haven't turned on my various widgets yet but....I can't get put the meta box into the sidebar and there is no option to add comments on any posts. Any advice?

If you're looking at a single post and you have commenting turned on, but don't see the ability to leave a comment, I'd check the theme's single.php file to see if it's got a link to the comments template.
You should have a link to:
<?php comments_template(); ?>
