Suggestions needed for plugins in several purposes (6 posts)

    Dear Wordpress people,

If I am writing this message into wrong forum, please point me to a right one.

After maintaining few csm-based webpages I have decided to build a web page using Wordpress for a non-profit making society which I'm a member of. Why Wordpress? Because it is very popular and hence has hundreds of plugins. Maybe I need plugins, maybe I don't. I am asking for your help to choose the right ones.

For ordinary news posts I don't I need any plugins. Wordpress is just what I need.

A page for contact persons would be great. A page for some kind of ID cards for the society members. There would be maybe six or seven "cards" on a page. A card should contain a photo, name, email-address and telephone number. It would be pretty handy to have a way for anybody to easily upload a photo (captcha would be nice) to the website's "engine room". After that the admin could accept the photo (maybe even rotate and crop it online?) and publish it with the card.

Any plugin(s) for that purpose? Or maybe you have a better idea how to execute this all, please?

I am also looking for a good calendar software. I tried wpng-calendar with the excellent Google Calendar, but I'm not sure if I liked it. That is because...:

Also I am making my best that also visually impaired and blind people could use the web page. The pop-ups of wpng-calendar looked nice, but for visually impared persons... I'm not sure if it's a good idea.

I am also trying to keep it all simple to make sure the web page will work with old computers too. Nowadays web pages (like Facebook, Flickr etc.) take a good slice of processor time. I just want it to work for most of us. However, I know sometimes compromises are required.

I'm also looking for a good gallery software for Wordpress. Anyone should be able to upload (captcha would be nice) the photos and the admin could then put them into gallery and publish them. Rotating is a must feature. There always comes photos that are upside down and they should be rotated online. The gallery itself should have support for making folders and automatic thumbnailing. It would be great if by clicking a thumbnail a resized photo would load up and by clicking that, the original sized, large photo.

And the server? It's FreeBSD with PHP, MySQL, ImageMagick etc. If a plugin needs something else to work properly, I request it from the admins and usually the improvements are online in a day.

My apologies - my English is pretty horrible. I hope you understood my aims.

Just out of interest, have you tried doing a search in the Plugins directory at all? :) The search isn't particularly intuitive (not like google) so a very good alternative is Google as well.

For your first question, it seems some others have also looked for something similar with this thread, although Addressbook seems to be the most promising (along with Little Black Book) despite the fact that no picture uploading is supported.

Hi mosey, thank you for a prompt reply.

I have searched the plugin directory, that is how I've tested few plugins already, for example the mentioned wpng-calendar :)

Thanks for the link. I will test those plugins today.

@meline: Apologies for not reading your post in full. Unfortunately I cannot recommend a calendar plugin at present, but with regards to good gallery software, a popular one is called NextGEN by AlexRabe.

Other than that, I believe Wordpress does cater for creating galleries/adding media far more easily than before with the 2.5+ series, and a number of authors have written plugins to extend this gallery function (perhaps worth looking through some of the latest plugins, or using tags, since they seem to focus the search better than the actual search) Maybe something like Flexible Upload?

Dear mosey, no need for apology :)

NextGEN is extremely wide spreaded and posh. I might install it if no alternative can be found. I'm looking for something simpler, not-so-web2.0 :)

Flexible Upload, wow! I have totally missed this gem. Thank you!

I'm keeping this thread "not solved" for a while longer.
