I haven’t used Twenty Fourteen yet for anything. Where exactly do you want to put it, at the very top above the menu, or below the menu above the featured posts area?
I would be looking to put it above the menu in place of a header image. I am not using the featured posts area.
My next question will be how can I have the slide show appear only on the home page.

Here’s a gist you can download to add a slideshow to the Twenty Fourteen theme.
It only loads the slideshow on the homepage, uses the regular header image on other pages if you have one. This is setup to work with a page as the homepage, if you want to have the blog as the homepage you have to use is_home instead of is_front_page.

Thanks for the code to get Meteor into my header and customizing it for the home page only. I am traveling right now so do not have the time to give it the attention it deserves. I want to set up a child theme before I do this as well. It will be a bit of learning curve for me. I do have a couple of questions.
It looks to me that the code you have linked to, totally replaces all the code in the header.php template. Is that right?
Also. To point the header to a particular slideshow is there a place to insert a short code? I see one spot where Meteor Slideshow is in red is that where the short code would go?

Yes, you would replace the whole header.php file with that code. Setting up a child theme first is a good idea, then you can make all your changes in there and not mess with the parent theme. So you can download the file for the gist and add it to your child theme, overriding the default header file in the child theme.
