• I am using featured posts in a grid layout on my front page. I want to us the featured image in the grid on the front page, but also prevent the featured image from appearing at the top of the post in the archive view.

How can I do that? I want to prevent it in the theme so I do not have to do it individually for every post. If I could use it as an avatar or icon in the post, with some control over whether it was background or a placed icon, I could live with that.

I have looked through the Twenty Fourteen files. Perhaps a hint as to which file(s) I would have to edit to remove the image from the single post would get me where I need to go. I have an experimental blog site where I can try it out.

Do not edit the Twenty Fourteen theme. It is the current default WordPress theme and having access to an original, unedited, copy of the theme is vital in many situations. First create a child theme for your changes. Or install a custom CSS plugin.

Thanks, esmi. I am a long-time WordPress user; but, although I have done a fair amount of html coding, I have never done much theme editing. Now I shall take a dive into child themes.

Still pondering what to change in the child theme: single.php might be a candidate and the call to function.php and the last function: Add Featured Content functionality.

But what to change and how is puzzling me, because this seems more related to the header call in single.php

I do not know enough about this subject, and reading the template files in the editor is not bringing me closer to understanding how to do what I want: to get rid of the featured image in single.php (I think)
