BuddyPress as twitter

    Is there a way to make BuddyPress works like twitter?
    I know is very open question; I made it work installing a ‘follow me’ plugin but it is disappointing how hard it is to get it all well configured as twitter. I wonder if somebody did it a what should be a descent configuration. Installing this ‘follow me’ plugin doesn’t make it work as i would like. For instance I don’t see any alert when someone posts an update in the streamline. Should i install another plugin..? ‘alert me’ pluging… if that exists?
    On a site note; I don’t know why the developers insists to keep such GUI… like, the one below. And a simplistic theme. Commons in a box theme did a better job than Buddy… no offense ( I now, it is free )
