I manually updated 3.5.1 to 3.8.1, per codex instructions. I’ve done this about 4 or 5 times before without problems (backed up, deactivated plugins, set permalinks to default, etc.) However, after the update, when I pressed F5, I got a “Warning: parse_url … unable to parse URL…” message. Said “Update Complete” but when I pressed “Continue” and then tried to display the blog I got a “This webpage has a redirect loop” message.

Since I had a complete backup, I restored all the files (back to 3.5.1). (I also have a database backup, but don’t have access to the hosting acct so I have to wait for the admin before I can see whether I can restore the database.) After restoring the files, pressed F5 and got pretty much the same message: “Warning:parse_url(http:///blog/wp-admin.php) [function.parse-url]: Unable to parse URL in /home/content/d/a/w/dawne/html/blog/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 976”. Trying to access the webpage gets me the same redirect loop message. I can get a login form through wp-login.php but it won’t accept my password.

Has anyone run into this before? Recommendations ?

    Solved. Thought I would share…

Background: The blog on this site is in a subdirectory: http://www.mysite.com/blog/. There is an .htaccess file at the http://www.mysite.com level which does canonical rewrites.

Solution: I renamed my .htaccess file to .htaccessOLD, at the mysite level. That allowed me to log into the blog so I could reset permalinks to their old settings. Once I did that I named the file back to .htaccess and now everything works fine.
