    Morning,

I’ve updated to WP 3.8.1 and Custom Sidebars 1.4.

I am using the StyleShop theme from Elegant Themes.

My Custom Sidebars are not showing on the published pages as they were before. When in the page editor, the default template is selected and the Custom Sidebar is also selected. But, when viewing the page (as a visitor would) the Sidebar is blank.

Additionally, on pages where a Custom Sidebar is used, the WP toolbar at the top of the page has disappeared. Pages that don’t use a Custom Sidebar still show the toolbar (when logged in).

I downloaded a previous version (1.3) of Custom Sidebars and installed it, but the problem persists.

Any ideas? This is a client site and I need to get this resolved pretty quickly. Thanks!

  • Hi @phenn,

Sorry to hear of the problems you are having.

Could you please share me the page links from your site where you are using custom sidebars and screenshot of custom sidebars settings by uploading the screenshot on any image sharing website like http://imgur.com/ and sharing its unique URL here so that i can troubleshoot it?

    Kind Regards,

Thank you so much for your response.

The site is shadow-caster dot com and I currently have Custom Sidebars deactivated so that the default sidebar through WP shows up.

However, here are some screen shots of what we’re dealing with:

When Custom Sidebars is activated, nothing shows. And, as I mentioned, the login/toolbar at the top is gone.

I’ve created different sidebars for product listings and general information and the client really wants those intact.

I’ve not altered the plugin’s code in any way.

Thanks again for taking a look and I’m open to any advice you might have.

    Hi @phenn

Would you please enable debug mode and check if any error is shown in that page?

To enable debug mode please edit a line in your wp-config.php:
    Change

    define('WP_DEBUG', false);

    to

    define('WP_DEBUG', true);

Let us know if you see any error.

    Cheers
    Ash

    Hi @phenn,

Thank you for sharing the screenshots.

To replace the default sidebar with custom sidebar for pages, set custom sidebar for pages in the admin area on the following path.

Admin -> Appearance -> Custom Sidebars -> Default Sidebars Tab -> Default sidebars for single entries -> Click on "By post type" -> Pages

If the above doesn’t help you then try setting it for individual pages from edit page screen ad displayed in the following screenshot.

    Best Regards,

I had the same issue with a site just now. After deactivating Custom Sidebars, i was able to re-add my sidebar content. But i lost the ability for different sidebars on each page.

I have WordPress and every widget updated. The funny thing is, that i have another site almost identical using Custom Sidebars and it’s operating fine. IT’s using all the same plugins and theme. Just the content is different.

    Thoughts?

    @phenn @robthomas,

    Hope you’re doing well today!

I suspect something may have changed this, perhaps a corrupted setting in the database? Could I get you to ensure all the widget areas are selected in the main settings page as shown below?

    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B7bdY1zZi8JeYUp0YzNJRWJsYXM/edit?usp=drivesdk

That should have the per-page areas show up to allow selection and hopefully will populate them with your previous values.

    Thanks,
    DAvid

    Hi David,

I have the same issue and can not open the google doc.

    I am reverting.

    Please advise.

    Thanks

Reverting didn’t bring back old settings…

Hi David, thanks for your help with this.

So, I shift+selected the two sidebars for replacing and it did add a blank sidebar to the site. Whereas before it was just full width. But, this is only when i add widgets to the two original sidebars, not the two custom ones i created.

Also, when i add widgets to the sidebar, nothing appears. It remains blank. I cleared my cache and checked in multiple browsers just to be sure. Nothing but a blank sidebar. Below is a link to the site i’m referring to. You’ll see the blank sidebar. I’ll leave it blank for the next 24-48 hours. After that, i need to revert back to the original sidebar configuration.

@smcfall, sorry I think I may not have selected to “share” that previous image. That’s shared now though.

Could you let me know, have you selected all the items int he list in the settings page?

@robthomas, when you go to edit that page you should see a custom sidebar options there. Could you please verify that the custom sidebar you’ve setup for that page is selected there?

    Thanks,
    David

    Hi David,

Yes, the sidebar is selected i created for that page.

    Hi @robthomas,

Thanks for your reply. Could I ask for you to try selecting different sidebars on that page to see how it displays?

Do all sidebars not appear properly when selected there?

Could you perhaps provide a screenshot of those settings so we could see the options you have available?

    Thanks,
    David

    Hi David,

Ok, got a break down with screenshots included here for you.

So, with the Custom Sidebars widget ACTIVE, this is how everything is setup and how the homepage displays.

Now, with the Custom Sidebar plugin DEACTIVATED…

    Sidebar Options while editing Homepage:
    There are none.

Can´t edit, add any widget or even access my sidebars i had previsously.
Sidebars shows on my website ok, but when trying to edit them or add a new widget, nothing happens. Looks like they´re ¨frozen¨
