I have a local MAMP install with WordPress 3.8.1. I had problems installing plugins, which ended up in me changing wp-content to 777. That solved some problems, butt not all.

The problem is that I’m still prompted for ftp credentials to activate the plugin. Why? (I don’t use ftp, since it’s a local install on my computer, so I can’t fill it out either.)

I take it there is some file somewhere outside wp-content that WP tries to edit, or something. Any ideas?

I’ve been reading dozens of threads with similar problems, but I still can’t get it figured out. What am I missing?

This is the first time I have personally heard of this happening. I can only suggest that something is very wrong in your server’s configuration.

Only the database (ie an update).

Well, I can’t say that’s not the case. But I appreciate any ideas on what (and where) can be so wrong so it makes WordPress ask for credentials to activate a plugin that is already installed.

Does this only happen with specific plugins? Or all plugins?

It actually seems that it now is limited to certain plugins, not all. In the beginning the problem was with all plugins, but it seems this actually was two problems – one with permissions, and one with specific plugins. It seems that I’ve solved the permissions problem but overlooked the fact that it might be a combined problem with the specific plugins I was trying.

I’m sorry for not figuring this out before creating this thread. Case closed.
