First, thanks for a fantastic plugin. The setup was easy as well as customizing the size of the thumbnails thanks to your tutorial.

However, we are experiencing something I cannot fix. When we first installed the plugin the thumbnail size defaults to 150×150 as usual. After we changed the settings, new thumbnails started showing up correctly. BUT…we noticed some of the thumbnails were displaying the wrong size (stretched). It appears this affects thumbnails that were previously displayed (before the size change) and the plugin is “locked in” to picking the 150×150 version.

We’ve cleared all caches and rebuilt all thumbnails already to try to correct it to no avail. Here is a page that clearly shows the problem:

The first two thumbnails reference the 150×150 thumb, while the third one displays the correct thumbnail. I have confirmed via FTP that the correctly-sized thumbnail does exist for those that are being referenced wrong.

    Thoughts?

I believe I found a fix, but think it still needs to be looked at. By assigning different related posts and saving it. Then removing them, it seemed to reset the thumbnail stored for that post (or at least picked the correct one now).

But…if you are to ever change the size of a thumbnail in the future (site move, theme change, etc.), all of your old posts will have skewed thumbnails.

Hey, first thank you for your compliments… and the effort you’ve put into finding a fix for this issue 🙂

There are a few things that users of any related posts plugin should be aware of…

    1. Generating related posts for an individual post each time this post is viewed in a browser (i.e. no caching involved) affects performance big time.
For more information I suggest you take a look at WPEngine’s list of forbidden plugins due to their database intensity.

    2. Caching generated related posts affects refreshing thumbnails. For example, if you set a new custom size thumbnails for related posts, cache has to be invalidated and related posts have to be re-generated for all posts and cached again.

This one is specific for our plugin:
    3. Manually inserted related posts (the ones you can assign to free slots) are cached separately and don’t get refreshed the same way as automatically added related posts do. That’s the reason why manually added related posts still had old thumbnails even though you’ve changed the size of custom thumbnails. Your fix is currently the only way to refresh thumbnails of such posts.

We’re aware of this issue and now we just have to figure out how to refresh these posts without affecting performance too much. Hopefully we’ll be able to include a fix for this in one of our next updates.

Let me know if something was not clear or if you have any other question – I’ll gladly help.

    Best, Mateja

I have the same problem on a client site : http://www.thestilettoholic.com/blog/

As you can see some thumbs are still 150×150, others are the correct size. Sometimes a thumbnail for the same post is at both size on the related post.

How can I fix that without going into every post (200+) ? Are you planning to get a fix for this soon ?

Thanks for the response, and I think you’re correct; #3 was our issue. Ideally there should be a way to clear this custom cache. Probably not always checking for new settings (affecting performance), but an admin-chosen option to clear the entire cache if needed (just like clearing cache in any of the other WP cache plugins).

Thanks again – working very well for me!

Hey @rémy, from what I can see you’re not using our plugin, you have Yet Another Related Posts Plugin (YARPP). I suggest you create a new support topic on their forum.

@ia2ca, no worries, we’ll crack this one eventually 🙂 Thanks again for your suggestions, we appreciate it.

Take care & have a nice day,
    Mateja

Yes I switched to YARPP because I have more control over display and related posts. Thank you for answering

    Thanks for letting me know.
