Support » Fixing WordPress » I accidentally have multiple WP usernames. How can I fix this?

  • I’m a newbie to using WP as anything other than a contributor to a group blog, and in the process of setting up my own WP blog accidentally created a different username for myself. I’m hoping someone more experienced can tell me how to handle this.

Here’s what happened. On the group blog the founder set up an admin account for me, with the format FirstName LastName. When I went to WP.org to set up my blog, I tried using that login, but it didn’t work and told me the username wasn’t recognized.

So I tried logging in with my email as the username, which did work. Now my individual blog has my email address as my username.

I’d like for people viewing either blog to be able to see that I’m on the other blog too, so I was wondering if there is a way to bring everything under one WP username. But is there a downside to doing that that I’m not seeing, because I’m a newbie? And I still don’t understand why WP.org didn’t recognize the login from the group blog — make sense to anyone here?

Thanks to anyone who can shed light on this.

  • In your user account, on both sites, you can configure it to show a “nice” name – basically a user name everyone can refer to *regardless of what the actual behind-the-scenes user name WordPress uses*.

WordPress.org is this site – it is a completely different system than your group blog. They are two separate systems. They run the same software (WordPress) but they are two different “computers” so to speak. Your login on your group blog is completely separate from the login on this site.

On the group blog the founder set up an admin account for me, with the format FirstName LastName. When I went to WP.org to set up my blog, I tried using that login, but it didn’t work and told me the username wasn’t recognized.

When you used a download from WordPress.org to set up your self-hosted site, there was no way your self-hosted site could have recognized any account you might have at any other site (such as can be possible at sites hosted at WordPress.com). And now that you have your site up and running, you can use any username you wish and even the same password you might already be using somewhere else. WordPress will not let you change an existing username, but there are plugins that can do that:

Another way to change a username is to make a new account with the desired username, then delete the previous account while simultaneously assigning all posts and such to the new account.
