This has got to be simple ,yet I am still unable to go directly from a login the the SITE VIEW. I always seem to end up at a DASHBOARD.

If you are looking for a plugin solution, this one is still working like a charm for me.

    http://www.trashcan.org/2006/12/15/wordpress-login-stayput-plugin/

It directs users back to the page they logged in from.

I'll give it a try. Right now, if a user logs in he is presented with the DASHBOARD. I want a visitor to go directly to the Site View after a login. They are confused with a dashboard presentation.
    Thank You !

Well...trying it but not sure this is what I was looking for.
I need a user to go directly to the "VIEW SITE" instead of the DASHBOARD.

Do you want to go to a "View site" prompt? Or directly back to the site after login? I was not satisfied with my users being presented with the dashboard after they logged in. This plugin takes them directly back to the page they were on when they selected the login link. Perhaps writing a custom re-direct would be a better solution this case. Either way, I hope you find what works well for your members.

    Clayton,
I want the user to go directly to the VIEW SITE after login.
Currently, a new login is directed to the DASHBOARD which is confusing for some older users of the blog.

now, after Logout, it would be nice for them to return to the main page of the website but the most important is that they be directed to the VIEW SITE page immediately after login and not that dashboard.
    Many Thanks !

Nothing so far has worked. I must be doing something wrong.
All I want is to have the user go DIRECTLY to the VIEW SITE screen after logging in. Currently they are taken directly to the DASHBOARD after logging in.

so when users click login, you want them to enter their details and then be directed straight back to the homepage?

Not sure what you mean by:

I want the user to go directly to the VIEW SITE after login.

"View Site" is just a link on the dashboard that takes you to your home page o your site.

.... This has got to be SIMPLE....What am I missing here...
NO NO>.. On the WP BLOG...after a user has logged in , he is taken to the DASHBOARD by default. this is NOT where I want a visitor to go after login. The visitor needs to go DIRECTLY to the "VIEW SITE", that is the MAIN PAGE of the BLOG and Not the DASHBOARD. I guess my reference to "View Site" is confusing... View Site is on almost all of DASHBOARDS by default. All I am wanting to do is take my elderly visitors directly to the MAIN PAGE of the BLOG by default. Taking visitors to a DASHBOARD is confusing. MOST visitors simply want to see the BLOGs and be able to comment or write a new one.

    Many Thanks

yes, your reference to view site was confusing... because that's not what you wanted.

if you want the main page, say the main page.

the plugin you were given does something extremely similar to what you want. Is it not working for you?

have you tried to google for other plugins?

    try this one http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/weasels-login-redirection/

Actually, it is what I wanted...If you go to a Default presentation without any plugins..or actually with plugins and go to the DASHBOARD, you will see (above all the menu selections) the word VIEW SITE.
View Site, is there by default, not placed by me. The creators of WP recognize that term as a link to go to the MAIN PAGE of the BLOG... that is all I wanted to do... Seems simple but still evades me....
All I want the visitor to do is go to the MAIN BLOG PAGE (View Site) after login and NOT to be taken to a DASHBOARD full of confusing terms.
Thanks for your reply and any assistance would really be appreciated.

no, it's not what you wanted... you don't want the "VIEW SITE" you want what comes when you CLICK "view site" --->> end result = FRONT PAGE.

when you're hungry do you say "I want flour and water and pieces of pig"

no... you say "I want a ham sandwich"

PS: I just gave you assistance up there^^^^ do you want to argue with me, or try that plugin I linked for you?

Thanks for clearing up what I wanted.
I did , in fact, want the result of clicking on the "View Site" which is the Main Blog Page or as you so eloquently put it, the "Front Page".
I have engaged the plugin you so kindly referred me to, however, I have yet to find the "Options" tab, subheading "Login Redirect" that is referenced in the plugin readme... Your idea is perfect and would surely work if only I could find the reference made by the author.
..AND, I do apprecite the assistance.

look under settings, instead of options, the plugin was designed for a previous version of wordpress.

you could maybe look around for a minute...

    ...Not giving up...
    Login Redirection Plugin installed...
Required Role Manager plugin to be able to see Redirection.
    Roll Manager Plugin installed...ok
Redirection set active for all users.
Redirection after login set to /blog/index.php
nope...still goes to that damn DASHBOARD
    Redirection set to http://www.mysitename.com/blog/
    Nope...
    Redirection set to http://www.mysitename.com/blog/index.php
    Nope...
WOW..what an enormous effort to take a user form LOGIN directly to the FRONT PAGE of the Blog...
    Still looking, hoping and testing...

Thanks for any and ALL assistance.

I want this too. It should be just a simple adjustment in one of the corefiles. Does anyone knows which corefile of wp to be edited?

WOW..what an enormous effort to take a user form LOGIN directly to the FRONT PAGE of the Blog...

It's no effort at all. Unless there is something that is way over my head here, and I am just not understanding what it is you want.

    I must reiterate:

I am using the latest version of WordPress. I am using this plugin:

    http://www.trashcan.org/2006/12/15/wordpress-login-stayput-plugin/

I uploaded it, activated it, and nothing more, no settings to screw with, no bells or whistles, and It does exactly what you want. This is what it does:

I go to the "frontpage" (home page, whatever page you want to call it, it's the first thing I see when I go to my site), of my blog, I click "Login", I login, and magically, I am instantly logged in and back on the front page of my blog. I never see the dashboard, I never see a link that says site view, or view site. In spite of the fact that this plugin states it was tested with version 2.0.5, it is still working perfectly for me on the 2.5 series.

Barring some irregularity in the URI structure of your actual WordPress installation vs the URI for your blog, I don't know what crazy thing would cause it not to work.

I hope you find a solution.

Your "home" (your main website )page, is not the front page of your blog, I just looked.Your site is here:

    http://www.friendsofbaldwin.com/

    and your blog is here:

    http://friendsofbaldwin.com/blog/

Two completely different web sites. Could this be the source of our confusion? Simple misunderstanding over which site you want to return to after someone logs out of your blog?

@ ClaytonJames, I have uploaded the plugin and activated it. My main site where wp is is http://www.weeklyfun.nl. It does not work for me as well. I see it has been tested for 2.0.5, I am using 2.3 and you are using the latest. It should work, but it doesn't. Any suggestions?

edit the loginform section of the wp-login.php page redirect to.

Change, ?php echo attribute_escape($redirect_to); ?> to your site url

    class="submit">
    type="hidden" name="redirect_to" value="ENTER SITE URL" />

    No plugins needed works fine

    KOFC126... You had the solution.
I edited the .php file and made your recommended solution.
After all the round-a bouts with everyone , trying to explain that I simply wanted to By-Pass the DashPanel and go directly to the blog after a login... your solution was quick and painless.... and WORKED !
The PLUGIN (WordPress-Login-Stayput) referenced earlier in this post, did NOT work. Actually I could not find it in the WP.org site either and it is not listed in the 2.6 compatible plug-in listing either....
I always try and stay away from plugins that can only be obtained form external sources and are not listed on the official WP site....

Many Thanks for your quick and thoughtful assistance....
    I really appreciate that !

Wow, some complicated ways in here.. There's a much simpler way...

Find where the link to your login page is on your theme or wherever. It'll probably look like this:
    http://example.com/wp-login.php

    Change it to this:
    http://example.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http://example.com/

That's all there really is to it. They login and then it redirects them to whatever the redirect_to is set to. No editing of the core files needed.

    Otto,

    Thanks for that...
An elegant and simple solution to a problem that cropped up several months ago and once again after the upgrade to ver. 2.6.1
A simple and easy solution that drew lots of "round-a-bouts" and "how-to-dos" and seemd to get more complicated everytime I tried to explain my simple problem...

    Many Many Thanks !

Alternative: If you want a login form right on the page, then this plugin/widget fits the bill:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/sidebar-login/

They can log in right from the sidebar, wherever they are. They don't get taken anywhere but back to where they came from. Simple, elegant. It works as both a widget or a template tag (for those of you not using widgets as your sidebars).

    Thanks..
We will try that one out too...
Better to have 2 solutions than one problem..
    Many thanks !

    Hi Otto,

Know this sounds really stupid but ...

When you say "Change it to this:" do you mean change it in the code in the theme or do you mean rename the file on the server.

    Thanks
    Steven
