what is the best way to get started designing themes? I am wanting to learn how to design a wordpress theme for my site. This is the only theme I will be designing and maintaining
option 1
mod the default wordpress theme (OK option might be easiest)
option 2
create one from the sandbox theme (looking like the best option, it will give the a soled base)
option 3
mode a theme that is close to what I want (I don't thinks this is a good idea could be hard to upgrade)

Eh, stay away from the default; it's not set up in a normal way, too many embedded images, etc.
Sandbox is a good jumping off point.

Don't know what you use for editing HTML and CSS, but I recommend TopStyle Pro ($80 may be too steep if you are a hobbyist, but they have a Lite/Trial/Free version .. it's a good way to learn proper CSS; TopStyle won't let you create a wrong stylesheet declaration)
