    Hi,

I have set up an installation with multisite.

I have a problem in that I am running the site at present using an instant alias on WebSitePanel. The domain is hosted/registered at Hostgator which is not where the install is.

I have added the *.wildcardsubdomain to the subdomain area in Hostgator’s cPanel

How do I point the wildcard domain to where the install is and do I need to add a redirect in cPanel?

Although the main domain works under the instant alias the subdomains do not.

Also I am getting this error in the Network creation page:

Warning: strpos(): Empty delimiter in network.php on line 327

    Many thanks for your time.

  • The *. needs to configured at the company that is hosting the site

    Thanks for the help.

Does this need to be an A record in the DNS settings? or do I add a wildcard domain to the subdomains in WebSitePanel?

    Many thanks for your time

    Both.

The A record tells the world “*.domain.com lives at domain.com”

The wildcard on the site panel tells your server “If someone comes looking for *, send them here.”

    Thanks Ipstenu.

I have tried everything and still cannot get Multisite to work. The TLD is fine but none of the subdomains work.

I even set up a new test domain and a new install on the same host so its all together but it still doesn’t work.

I have noticed that the server is running on IIS and I have no htaccess file.

    Could this be the problem?

I have reinstalled WordPress and the wildcard subdomains are working and all the DNS settings are correct.

The network is created ok and I can see all the network admin menu’s and can create a subdomain site and it appears in the dashboard ok.

When I go to the subdomain dashboard I get a 404 error and when I go to visit the subdomain site I get the standard “this site is under construction page.”

I have used the web configs from these posts and still no joy.

I am running the very latest version of WordPress 3.8 and switched off all the plugins while installing the network.

    I am using MySQL 5.1, PHP5.3.5 on IIS7.5

If you’re on IIS you have a web.config file instead of .htaccess but …

when I go to visit the subdomain site I get the standard “this site is under construction page.”

That isn’t WordPress. That’s you not making your subdomains point to the right place on your webhost. They should point to where the main install is located. Normally a subdomain points to it’s own location, as if it was a separate installation. That’s usually where things go weird.

    Thanks Ipstenu.

I think I have found the issue. I am using WebSitePanel, which since V2.0 or so does not allow wildcard subdomains without a dedicated IP.

It is not enough to have the wildcard * in the DNS settings. It needs a dedicated IP address to bind the DNS settings and this is not available in WebsitePanel without the IP.

(as far as I can tell anyway)

I shall report back later with my findings as I have not tested it yet.
I was told by my hosting company that my package had wildcards setup.

Not all hosts require static IP. Many do. it’s something you have to ask with the host :/

Thanks for the help. all up and running. Just to confirm if you are using WebSitePanel that you need a dedicated IP address for it to all work.

With the IP, the install and adding of subdomains all worked as per the WordPress instructions.

    Thanks again
