looking at the wordpress manual I have managed to force admin over SSL by define(‘FORCE_SSL_ADMIN’, true); in wp-config. Is it also possible to add https:// on my homepage, so people recognise my site is secure as soon as they have visited my site.

You can do that in .htaccess. You can use rules similar to this:
```
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
RewriteRule ^/?(.*) https://%{SERVER_NAME}/$1 [R,L]
```

You should install WordPress Https to force it: http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-https/
