Widget problem with child themes

    So, when did requirements for child themes change? Not too many releases back, all you needed to have for a child theme was a stylesheet referencing the parent theme and all of the parent theme features came through including widget areas, menus, etc.

    Now I’m missing all my widget areas, and widgets/menus are missing from the appearance menu.

    Is this a problem with the parent them or do I need to do something with the child theme to make sure all the parent appearance features come through?

    They haven’t changed.

    Not quite. Widgets, headers, backgrounds and custom menus have only ever been stored on a per-theme basis and, in this respect, child themes are treated just like any other theme.

    “widget areas” not “widgets”
    I’m talking about features, not content

    When the parent theme is activated (which, by the way, is also child theme) there are 10 widget areas, when the child theme is activated, there are 3.

    I was mistaken, though, menus and widgets options are still there in the appearance menu

    Perhaps your child theme re-defines the available widget areas?
