• During testing I signed up via paypal for a free trial that was to last 3 months and then be charged the monthly subscription fee. I signed up, checked within paypal to make sure there was the recurring payment setup, then changed my subscription to free within WP. I did it in Users > Memberships Levels in the WP backend. It showed me as having the free subscription when I looked at my account page. However after the three months was up, I was still charged by PayPal. Luckily this was a test and it was just me, but what is the proper way to change a membership level for someone (through admin) to avoid them being charged and to properly change their level and process it correctly? I would assume this wouldn’t have happened if I clicked “change membership level” from the user account page, because it is vital that at least that works correctly. Am I right or did I configure something wrong?

My second question is, what does this mean:
The price for membership is $0.00 now and then $34.00 per Month. After your initial payment, your first 2 payments are Free.

I want a trial period of two months so I set the first two payments to be free. I also set the initial payment to be free. But this wording sounds as if the initial payment is free, then two months on top of that is also free? Is this correct, should I set 0 now, and 1 free trial month, so that it gives them the initial payment free, another payment free, and then charges on the third month. Is that right?

  • Thank you for using Paid Memberships Pro. Are you using PayPal Standard? There does sometimes seem to be an issue with PayPal not registering the cancellation of a subscription or a switch to a free level. We would reccomend trying to upgrade to PayPal Express and seeing if the issue persists.

To answer your second question…the wording on pricing page means:
“The price of membership is $0.00 now…” = Initial set up fee is $0.00

“and then $34.00 per month…” = $34/month is the subscription price.
“After your inital payment, your first 2 payments are Free” = After the set up fee (In this case = $0), the first two months payments are free

If you would like to customize the text on the pricing page you would need to hard code the level’s page by removing the shortcode and inclue the text/price/html/ect that you want. Or you can consult our website at

on how to do a custom level page.

Let us know if this works for you. Thanks again.
