How do I add the first and last name user profile fields into the wp_users table in phpMyAdmin?

    That's in the wp_usermeta table.

What do I do in the wp_usermeta table?

I'm trying to make it so the first and last name fields show up in the wp_users table. When I click on Browse in the wp_users table, I can see fields like username, email address, url, etc. I just want the first and last name fields to show up there as well. Thanks.

    No, you don't.

    What do you REALLY want?

wow... this is going to be fun.

Obviously you want to achieve something beyond putting data where it doesn't belong. Come and sit on Santa's knee, and tell him what you'd like for Christmas.

Dude; Ivovic...are you a kid or something? Why the sarcasm? I'm sorry if I'm not a database pro like you. You could have simply just said, "Those fields don't belong in that table." If you're going to act like an ass, just stay off the forum. I'll wait to get help from someone who can act like an adult.

To anyone else out there, so it is impossible to add these fields to the wp_users table? I would think that if the email, username, website url, etc. fields can be put in there, these could be too. Thanks.

that's twice I tried to find out what you're actually trying to do... I don't normally try that hard even if I'm getting paid.

You don't wanna tell? Suit yourself, and feel free to ask for a refund if you weren't satisfied with the support you got.

If you have no idea what you're hoping to achieve by this, then why the Gordon Ramsay are you doing anything at all to the database? get the hell out of there.

WHY are you in the database at all? What user information are you trying to add to the site that cannot be added via the WP Dashboard? That's where everything should be added unless things have gone horribly horribly wrong and you are trying to repair or troubleshoot something.

And if you don't know why you are doing something, that is a Big Fat Clue you shouldn't be doing it. We're trying to help you here, but you seem to be hell bent on blowing up your blog. I'll be under my desk if you need me.

And if you go into the WP Dashboard, where god Himself intended for you to put WP data, you'll see that there is a place for a user's first name and last name. Who'd've thunk it?

Trying to pick up chicks on a Wordpress forum? Pretty pathetic if you ask me.

Joni, I'm not trying to add anything to the site. I'm well aware that the WP Dashboard has a place for first name and last name. At some point in the past, I added these fields to the wp_users table, but I don't remember how I did it (I think it was in the users.php file in wp-admin). I was doing some trial and error and got them on there. I have now gotten used to seeing these fields with all the other ones, but since I upgraded to 2.5.1, they are not being populated when the user fills in their first and last names.

Now look, I know this isn't something critical, so I don't need to be lectured over and over again with "Why are you even in the database?" I'm just curious to learn more about databases and to see if this can be done. I have already backed up my entire blog files and database, so if something goes wrong, it's not the end of the world. I do appreciate any help, but it doesn't get me anywhere when all I keep hearing is, "What are you trying to do?" and "Why are you doing that?" I've been clear on what I am trying to do, and frankly, why the hell does it matter why I'm trying to do it? Bottom line is, I have something I want to do, and I'm trying to see if it's possible. Again, thanks to anyone who will actually offer some help.

    >I've been clear on what I am trying to do

no, you were clear on what butchering you wanted to do, when no such butchering was necessary.

    >and frankly, why the hell does it matter why I'm trying to do it?

because we're supposed to be helping, not assisting you to f*ck up your database, you with me there?

you don't want help... you're just pissed off because someone's asking you to explain yourself, instead of helping you break your wordpress.

well, enjoy that - I hope you find someone willing to talk you through euthanizing your installation.

    >Trying to pick up chicks on a Wordpress forum?

Actually no... not at all, but I am a pretty happy guy with a generally jovial nature. Are you trying to make something of it?

    ...

Amazing what it takes to get you to finally spit out what you want to do, though, isn't it?

@ Cortex: Jebiga! :-| I beg to differ with you, Cortex. You were NOT clear about what you wanted to do. You just kept harping on the fact that you wanted to do it. Now, I'm no database expert, but it seems to me that unless there is a specific call to something in the database table, just the mere act of putting the information in there is pointless. Are you willing to edit the WP core files? Have at it.

And no, I don't think I'm being too nosy by asking you those questions. I am trying to help you, whether you believe that or not, and in order to do so, I need to know what your goal is, because maybe there's another way to do what you want that maybe you hadn't thought of. It's better to err on the side of having too much information, IMHO, rather than having to pull teeth to get the information I need in order to try to help you out. If you want to learn more about databases, head over to http://www.mysql.com/. I'm not being a smartass, but really, for what you want to accomplish, that's your best bet, not this forum.

Just because I'm an exceedingly nice guy:

    http://coffee2code.com/wp-plugins/get-user-custom-field-values/

Figure out how to use that, and stay out of your DB.

PS: Strictly, a plugin isn't necessary for this at all - but lets all remember, this is a guy who wants to add fields to his users table, to make this happen.

    >no, you were clear on what butchering you wanted to do, when no such butchering was necessary.

No such butchering was necessary? Who the hell are you to tell what is and isn't necessary for my database? If I want to try and do something with it, that's my call. You are the one who is supposed to be the "pro", offering solutions, not getting in the way of what people are trying to achieve.

    >you don't want help... you're just pissed off because someone's asking you to explain yourself, instead of helping you break your wordpress.

Yeah, that's my whole purpose it to see how I can screw up my wordpress. Please, someone tell me how I can make it not work. How is it that I have not explained myself? How many times have I said what I am trying to do?

    >well, enjoy that - I hope you find someone willing to talk you through euthanizing your installation.

I also hope I can find someone who can actually offer solutions instead of just asking me Why, Why, Why. If it's not possible to do, just say that instead of beating around the bush with your "What are you hoping to acheive by this?" None of your damn business. Give me the solution, tell me it's not possible, or shut the f*ck up.

    >Actually no... not at all, but I am a pretty happy guy with a generally jovial nature. Are you trying to make something of it?

Is that some sort of a challenge? I hope you're not trying to pick fights on here on top of picking up chicks. Have some self respect man.

A wanker? Good one. I love the name calling that comes from a wordpress nerd who thinks he is cool. Please try and get a life, and make sure not to respond to any of my posts in the future.

you tell me to "shut the f*ck up" and I'm the one name-calling? ;) yes, clearly you're the defenceless victim here.

This post will get sanitized, but that shit rattling around in your head will still be there.

Have an nice day, and you're welcome for the solution -- the air is cleaner on the high ground.

Whoa...did I hit a nerve with my "wordpress nerd" comment. Sure seems like it.

Oh, and by the way, "shut the f*ck up" is not name calling. You egged that on by telling me I was just pissed off and trying to break my wordpress.

Oh, and not to hurt your ego about your "ingenious" solution that you so graciously gave me, but that plugin doesn't solve the problem.

it doesn't address your question, but it definitely solves your problem.

your original question was about how to use phpMyAdmin - clearly you're in the wrong place, as Joni pointed out...

And no, you can't hurt my feelings, I simply don't respect you enough. I just figure since this thread is going to be heavily moderated I may as well not restrain myself.

PS: I'm not worthy of the title, but since when did accusing someone of knowing much more than you, become an insult? I hope that one day you learn enough for someone to call you a nerd.

Wow, let me tell you how sad it makes me that you don't respect me. My whole day is now ruined...Ivovic doesn't respect me. How is life going to go on? This guy from wordpress who can't offer solutions doesn't respect me. PLEASE Ivovic...please respect me! My self worth will be gone without your respect.

Like I said before, get a life and quit making me respond to your pathetic ramblings.

I guess I was right...it was the nerd comment. It's ok dude, just live with it.

PS: Being a nerd becomes an insult when you use the fact you know more than someone else to justify using sarcasm and a condescending tone when your reply to their questions. Might want to keep that in mind in the future when you want to start using your cool computer nerd comments like, "come sit on Santa's lap..."

You know, despite the sarcasm in your post, I actually believe you.

For the record, I didn't resort to sarcasm until your post in which you said you had nothing to achieve with your request here.

"??? You lost me. I don't know, what do I really want?"

It was obvious at that point that you were the kind of person who only likes answers if they match your expectations. How arrogant and closed-minded of you.

really, I'm not upset, you wanna hug? maybe you want the last word?

I'm in such a giving mood that it's all yours if you want it. If you don't take it, then on behalf of the rest of the forum, I thank you for finally pissing off.

I will take the last word to correct your stupid ass once again.

    >For the record, I didn't resort to sarcasm until your post in which you said you had nothing to achieve with your request here. It was obvious at that point that you were the kind of person who only likes answers if they match your expectations.

"Come and sit on Santa's knee, and tell him what you'd like for Christmas." "feel free to ask for a refund if you weren't satisfied with the support you got"

If you don't think these comments are sarcastic and condescending, then you should probably go back to school. Obviously, your english skills aren't as honed as your computer nerd skills.

Have a nice night Ivoprick. :)

This post history is highly amusing and I would like to thank you both for entertaining me this afternoon with your public displays of affection, but you should probably get a room in future :)

To the point of the original question, I am myself wondering how I add additional user profile fields within a plugin I am writing. I am looking at the Dashboard and nothing is immediately jumping out at me in how to do this? I have implemented the show_user_profile action and added the field I want, but I am not sure how to save this and repopulate it next time the profile page is viewed - can you help?
