There already is a way to do this. You just need to type in a custom shelf id instead of choosing the shelf from the dropdown.

I am not using the widget but I see now the ID function…
But:
It won’t work really reliable on a page
e.g
If this is the URL from an own shelf:
http://books.google.com/books?uid=xxxxxxxxx_coll=1003&hl=de&source=gbs_lp_bookshelf_list
then the ID is “1003”
the code for a page is e.g.
[google_bookshelves shelf=”1003″ max = “50” layout = “description”]
Not every ID from each shelf is working correctly. I have three own shelves, ID 1003, 1005 and 1006. Only one of the IDs will be displayed….
