Add anything other then images to a gallery?

I am planning on using wordpress 3.8 but the problem occurs anywhere after version 3.5. After they switched to the new media manager I cannot figure out how to make a gallery with anything other than images. The reason I am trying to do this is so I can setup a gallery of documents, images, videos, audio files and throw it on any page I need to. In the old wordpress there was an option to show a given file (audio, video, document, whatever) in the gallery for this post. This is the option I used in the past to get everything into the gallery (here). In the new wordpress this option is gone and when you go to create gallery it will only let you upload images, if you switch to uploaded files you can put a pdf or a document in but as soon as you hit create gallery it says no files found. I would use a plugin or anything else that could do the job. I am basically just trying to make a gallery with various types of documents so that I can attach it to a page and it will show up like a gallery with icons for everything.
