• I have an old blog that I’m trying to reconnect so that I can get the content from it in XML format.

I still have the old database and have it connected. All of the posts show up in the list on the homepage. However, when I click through to a story, I get:

    Not Found
Sorry, but you are looking for something that is not here

Also, when trying to access the Site Admin, I get a 403 error.

Have you reinstalled this from a backup or changed the URL since you were last able to access it?

I did reinstall from a backup, but to the same URL/directory it was in before.

Would it have anything to do with the pretty URLs? The .htaccess file does have the rewrite rule in there.

Scratch that. I just took out the pretty URL code from the .htaccess and it didn’t work. Still the same issue.

Also, I read that I should replace everything aside from my wp-content folder using the same version I have now. I tried that as well with the same results.

This may be due to the permalink setting as I have seen similar issue after a site has been restored from a backup.

Try going into settings => permalinks and clicking save. If that does not fix it, then try setting permalinks to default and clicking save to troubleshoot whether this might be a ‘pretty permalinks’ issue.

I can’t get to any of the admin pages either. Same 403 error.

What is the URL of the site?

Try renaming the .htaccess to old.htaccess – this is to temporarily delete it, but without preventing you from getting it back if you need to.

I renamed the .htaccess to old.htaccess and cleared my browser cache and I still get the error.

Try looking directly at what is in the old database to make sure your content is really there.

Also, make sure you restored full permissions to use the database to the old site’s user account.

All of the content is there (all 500mb worth) and I created a new user with full permissions. Still no access. I’m going to move it to another server and see if that works.

The only out of the ordinary thing I can think of is that several years ago, this client had taken the site down because of some form they had on their site and bots constantly hit it, sending floods of emails. I’m not sure what the site admin did at the time to fix it, aside from just take the WP folder down. I don’t know if the server admin did anything to it or not. I can’t really get any answers on what happened since I’m dealing with non-technical people.

How … old? I mean, what version of WP?

You may want to copy it all down locally to your computer and run from localhost.

Version 2.9.2. I thought about updating it to a newer version, but I was hoping to get it up and running before I did that.

I’d like to do a local version of it and test it out, but I don’t have a local server, just my personal web space and the client’s.
