• Hi , I have just installed WP 3.8 using an auto installer (softaculous). It unfortunately does’nt give an option to install a different version.

So here’s the problem: the theme I purchased is compatible upto 3.7 and the developers when contacted have said that they have not tested it on 3.8 , so to stick to compatible versions for now.

I know the moderators here are going to say dont downgrade due to security. But I have no other option as of now. Can anyone help ?

  • Hey Gtantra,

This has been covered in the past on the forums:

    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/downgrade-to-older-version?replies=4

Do you have FTP access? If so, download it from http://wordpress.org/wordpress-3.7.1.zip.

You will then need to manually move the files to the location where WordPress is installed.

    WARNING!!!!

Make sure you back up your WordPress installation prior to this, especially everything in wp-content (themes, plugins, uploads, etc). You will also need to back up your database.

After you have moved over WordPress, you will then need to move the themes, plugins, and uploads back to wp-content, as the process above will overwrite your existing files.

I understand that this is not full proof, so tread lightly.

The above solution is NOT complete. In order to rollback, you will also need to restore a pre-upgrade database backup.

    Hey Esmi,

I forgot about that! Thanks for posting it.

This is a first time install for a fresh site. So I presume I dont need to do any backup …

@allen:I do have ftp access. Yes , I will copy files over..

    @esmi : I hav’nt understood what is meant by “restore a pre-upgrade database backup”

Where did you purchase this theme from? Have you spoken to the theme’s developers and asked them if their theme is compatible with WordPress 3.8? If not, why not?

Yes esmi , I purchased from themeforest. I have written to the developers about 3.8 .
They have assured that they will update in time , but for now to use 3.7 as they have not yet tested on the latest ver

pasted below is their reply :

    Hi there,

we haven’t yet tested the theme for 3.8, if any issues will pop up when we do so , we will release an update. It shouldn’t be any issues, but its better to stick to compatible versions for now.

If you have any other question, feel free to ask us.

Gtantra, before you go about the process of resetting your WP install consider if your theme is currently broken first. Just because it hasn’t been updated, doesn’t mean there is an issue right away.

I would recommend that the best thing to do here is just to continue to use your theme, but also use your website on the front end. Browse it and interact with it. If something is broken, then be part of the process to fix it. Make reports to the theme developer through whatever support system they have so they can fix it.

There is plenty of WP software that works fine with 3.8, but it all depends. Instead of stepping backward to 3.7, stay with 3.8 and take part in the process of moving your theme forward. After all, you invested in it, and some would argue you should be part of the debugging process since you can contribute valuable information to the theme developer when bugs are discovered.

Wow thanks Prometheus Fire… I just about to roll back , but after reading your comment I think I will install the theme in 3.8 . Thanks again

I’m having the same issue and need to downgrade as my customised theme does not work with 3.8

I don’t have a pre-upgrade backup of my site so am not sure what I can do.

Any help is much appreciated as our business relies heavily on our website. Thanks
