   I have upgraded per all instructions and still can not upload pics. This is crazy...what is going on? I though this update was to fix all this stuff.

   You aren't the only one with no success.

   My server is running OSX 10.4 PPC, apache 1.3, php5, mysql 4. Have tried the htaccess approach but it didn't help out. Installing WP 2.5 on MacIntel running Apache 2, php5, mysql 5 and the media uploader does work properly. Something on server side me thinks.

   I basically decided to stick with the no-flash-uploader plugin until a solution shows up (or I get a new MacIntel as a server).

   I can upload them just fine. I just can't insert them into posts no matter what I do.

   Just updated to 2.5.1 and am experiencing the same issue as moonvine. I was able to upload an image, but I cannon insert it, or any of the existing images in the Media Library, into a post.

   Just upgraded to 2.5.1 and was having this SAME problem in 2.5 (depending on the time of day).

   While it is Crunching, it then says HTTP Error. Doesn't finish uploading and no images.

   Len Flexible Upload worked for me! Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou! I am new to wordpress and have new install of wordpress 2.5. have not been able to upload an image using the flash installer, but it now works! I was worried I would have to upgrade to 2.5.1 but I'll hold off for now.

   Unfortunately, I logged out and went back in and now I am back to the same 'file is empty ...could be problem with php.ini' error message when trying to upload images. I was very excited for a while.

    As others in this thread, I have done a full upgrade -- manually, deleting all files except those specified in the instuructions -- and then uploading. Everything went fine but I still cannot upload images.

    I get the error message "Unable to create directory /wp-content/uploads. Is its parent directory writable by the server?"

    The parent directory is 777 and /uploads is also 777

    I have no flash uploader active; makes no difference.

    I tried with all plugins diabled; this time I got as far at the HTTP error that others have reported.

    I plan to try felxible uploader.

    Please can we have this functionality back.

    Was having the same problem as the rest of you, getting the http error. I followed all the instructions (cleared the cache, emptied the /wp-content/uploads/js_cache, disabled all plugins) but nothing worked. I uploaded images using a stand-alone ftp program, but wordpress wouldn't recognise them.

    Finally, I installed the no flash uploader plugin. Now it lets me choose the file, but when I try to upload it gives me a "Specified file failed upload test" error. BUT, if I go to the Media Library tab, the image appears. Then if I click the 'Show' link, and then choose 'Insert into Post', it works. The image appears as a link, which needs to be removed, but otherwise everything's okay.

    Just posting this in case it helps someone. I've been screaming in frustration the last week trying to find a way to get this working, so I feel your pain. It's difficult to understand how something that's so obviously broken wasn't caught in testing.

    My installation does not work with Flexible Uploader either.

    Same problem here, independent of using flexible uploader, the no flash uploader plugin, or the native application. Really, really frustrating.

    It's difficult to understand how something that's so obviously broken wasn't caught in testing.

    Just install

    no flash uploader

    plugin and the problem will be gone. I had the same issue and resolved it by adding this plugin.

    I found that when I log into my site by going directly using the wp-login.php I have a problem adding images to posts, but if I go to my site and use the "Log in" link on the home page, I don't have the problem. Do any of you have the same result and does anybody know why this is?

    Hi Everyone,

    I fixed the problem for myself. Here's what worked for me.

    1. Reinstalled 2.5.1
    2. Cleared Cache in browser and in Content folder
    3. Installed the latest version of Flash (this I believe did the most to fix it even though I was already using a pretty new version).
    4. Switched from Firefox to Safari

    I will log in again after some posts and days go by and report if it is still working flawlessly.

    Im very pleased at the moment!

    Because none of the testers can reproduce your problem? Seriously, I cannot make it happen. The uploader *just works* on every installation I've done. Okay, yes, the IE bug was something that should have been caught, but it's fixed now and it works.

    Don't make the mistake of thinking that just because lots of people here have problems that this is a valid sampling. This is a support forum, people who come and post here have problems more or less by definition.

    The number of people having problems with the uploader is less than 1 percent, from my experience.

    Same problem as the other people: after upgrading my 2.5.0 to 2.5.1 I'm not allowed to post images anymore. I mean I can't upload images nor insert old ones (already uploaded) into posts. Consider that I've already done all of the things suggested in this page, but none of them fixed the problem. Well, it looks like this kind of feature wasn't tested enough. Anyway, I'll try to find out wich is the problem and post the solution right here. Maybe it depends on the platform I'm working with (Iceweasel for Debian GNU/Linux)... Anyone using the same?

    @ Otto442: I understand your pain, since we (those affected) will be far less than 1% of the total amount of users.

    Nevertheless, for those affected by it this problem is more than real. Since (relatively speaking) there are so many of them, it seems like a weird thing that no beta-tester stumbled upon this in the process of developing and testing.

    More painful is the situation that no fix is given. If any of the developers is looking here, feel free to contact me to get all the login details to reproduce the problem in my environment.

    What I am saying is that no fix will be forthcoming as long as nobody with technical expertise can reproduce the problem or as long as those people with the problem don't step up and offer fixes themselves.

    No, see, I'm mainly responding to those people who are saying things like "why hasn't this been fixed yet" or "I can't believe the developers missed this" or other things that, basically, throw the problem and blame onto somebody else's shoulders. You're the one with the problem and only you can fix it. All we can do here is attempt to help you do that.

    I'm more than happy to offer advice and suggestions, but these issues all seem to be specific to certain setups or something. Some people's shared servers just don't much care for AJAX requests, I think. It's a hard one to track down.

    I'm so sorry not to be as technically expert as you and not to be able to offer a fix. I've copied the various error messages I get, and raised a couple of questions (like, why does the error say "unable to create ..." when the folder exists, has the required permissions, and does not need creating). If there is something more that I can do, let me know what it is. I'm happy to follow instructions and report back.

    I'm also willing to give someone access to my set-up if it would help solve the problems.

    I still hadn't the chance to explore the code and (try to) fix the problem, but tailing my webserver logs I found out that the browser goes on posting the admin-ajax.php script while editing a page or an article:

    187.128.111.158 - - [29/Apr/2008:09:47:14 +0200] "POST /wordpress/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php HTTP/1.1" 200 143 "http://www.ivan.agliardi.net/wordpress/wp-admin/post-new.php" "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; it; rv:1.8.1.14) Gecko/20080404 Iceweasel/2.0.0.14 (Debian-2.0.0.14-0etch1)"

    The posts follow each other at the rate of about one per second. This didn't happen in my previous installation and causes at least 3 kinds of trouble to me:

    1) Can't upload/manage images
    2) Often can't even save changes (the "save" button doesn't work or need to be clicked a lot of times to save changes)
    3) Logs are messed up beause of those useless posts, distorcing web access statistics

    I'm not sure it will, but I hope this can help you a little.

    same problem here. In adding image I got the error http error. I try using the same version in my local host and I can upload my image but in my main blog an error occurred if I upload an image. I even change the setting of my full path for uploading files and still got the error. What to fix?

    I'm reposting this observation that may help someone troubleshoot the problem.
    I found that when I log into my site using the wp-login.php I have a problem adding images to posts.
    If I go to my site and use the "Log in" link on the start page under "meta", I don't have the problem.

    I too was having problems with inserting images into a post or a page, but then I discovered something: Insert image doesn't work when using tabs in Firefox or Internet Explorer. If you open a new window or don't have any tabs open, insert image works fine. This seems to be a strange bug and hopefully it will be corrected in the next version.

    Actually, Insert Image works perfectly fine with tabs in Firefox and in IE for me. Maybe you're using some weird sort of add-on that prevents it from working.

    When I try to upload a 1.2MB video, I get "Your file is too big. Your php.ini upload_max_filesize is set to 16MB."

    2.5.1 Upgrade no help.
    Flexible Upload no help.
    Disabling Flash uploader no help.
    Clearing js_cache no help.
    Clearing cookies and browser cache no help.
    Re-install with delete old files no help.
    Supposed IE fix no help (although I can now upload still images).
    Switching browsers no help.
    Switching from Windows to Mac no help.
    Logging out then logging back in no help.

    Just out of curiosity, what are the server security settings when WP is tested? If they're too lax, then the whole lot can be borked if the end-user has increased security settings (which they may not be able to do beans about, even *IF* they knew how!).
