How to set up progressive product page lists

I am trying to get my website product categories to progressively drop down through my product category and sub-categories as drop downs.
IE: I want to see on my homepage the primary categories, when I click on the prime category I go to a drop down list of the sub-categories, each clickable to get to those products.
Any advice you can offer would be great.
