Support » Fixing WordPress » How can I post on a page

  • Hi there..

I am new to html so am sorry if I appear to be a dummy..

I have just set up a website using wordpress for the structure..

    Question 1.

I have set up 6 pages.. The thing is I want to be able to post on each of those pages, For example on my “Production music page” I want to post relating to that page.. I can’t for the life of me find where I can do that.

    Question 2.

    In my sidebar it includes.
    RECENT POSTS
    CATEGORIES
    RECENT COMMENT

    How do I Reword/change

    RECENT POSTS to RECENT NEWS
    CATEGORIES to MUSICAL STYLES
    RECENT COMMENTS to LISTENERS COMMENTS

    Thanks in advance
    Rene Dwight

    R.e my post..

I need to create posts on pages I create..I thought this would be simple, I am new to this so please let me know if I my question is silly and what I am asking is something that simply cannot be done..

    Many thanks…

The most common problem i see on these forums is when people don’t understand the concept of posts and pages.

There is no need for you to do this. Use categories to achieve the goal.

really, the way forward for wordpress on this, is to provide common extraction methods via the admin interface, on its pages.

… so that people can make a ‘page’ which pulls posts from category a,b,c but not d, all via a simple web-form in the dashboard.

With so many people hacking their own Loops and putting them into page templates, it seems only logical to offer this via the interface.

That would certainly clear this sort of thing up for good, because you could actually use pages and their 1-level permalink urls to extract information while maintaining your category archives as just that… archives.

    Ivovic,
Category_Templates do exactly what the OP was asking and what you think should be a “new feature”. It is already in WP.

if it is, it’s new to 2.5, and you’ll have to excuse me for staying clear of that one for now.

I agree, category templates do exactly what the OP wants, except that the OP is new to HTML – and I can’t imagine how new to PHP, so I feel the customisation of those templates isn’t necessarily going to be a cakewalk.

I was simply suggesting a method which would eliminate 80% of support questions, and which should have been part of WP’s admin interface for the last two years. My bad 😉

    Thanks for posting folks..

My level of html knowledge is very basic…. I am able to modify PHP in the sense that you would train a monkey to carry out a task.. for example if you say go to this php page and change this code to that code.. that I can do [ after making the backup of course ].. understanding the codes and what is going on .. hmm probably not..

As to the wordpress questions I have I always Googled before but as last resort I post here… I suppose the thing with wordpress is there are many versions and most people seem to be fiddling and creating all sorts of exciting stuff.. that’s when a newbie like myself can get really confused…

It maybe I am trying to use wordpress in a way it is not meant to be used.. I am in essence trying to build my business site around wordpress but allow people to comment on certain pages..

I have to say I am so impressed with the way “all” of you and the folk on these forums try to help one another.. outstanding…

Have a great weekend all.. Rene

Rene, you’re not really going beyond the scope of wordpress in any way. For someone with a little php literacy, wordpress can be an extremely flexible tool.

Unfortunately, it does require that little bit of literacy even to do what seemingly EVERYONE wants to do with it – and that was the reason for my comments above.

It could be made easier than it is – but until that happens, a little reading will do you the world of good. The more PHP you read, the easier it becomes to understand what’s going on in there.

Start with the page linked for you above, and look into category templates – I bet you’ll find it easier than you think.

    Thanks Ivovic..

if it is, it’s new to 2.5,

You mean the Category_Templates? No, they are in use for ages.

Simply, the OP had the wrong approach. That is why I started to argue.

For classification (?categorization?) of posts you DO NOT create Pages. You create categories. Period.
Then if, and only IF you want to change the look of the different category listing – you want to use Category Templates. Otherwise you do not have to do anything.

    Let’s not overcomplicate it.

So, the OP should delete ALL the Pages created, create categories for the different posts, and then, after all this, we can address the display in the sidebar issue.
    It is that simple.

No, I don’t mean category templates – you suggested that what I wanted was already a wordpress feature.

Unless 2.5 has a 3-click system in the wp-admin for inserting a custom Loop into a wordpress page, then no, the feature I want doesn’t exist.

it may seem redundant to you, but I will only refer you to 10,000 threads here from people all expecting to be able to extract data from their posts into pages.

It can be done very easily – but not easily enough, and there’s no reason wordpress couldn’t create a custom loop for you with options you specify, instead of an actual text-entry field when writing a page.

it would just need to be an option in the admin interface… and hundreds of threads a month disappear from the support forum.

it may seem redundant to you, but I will only refer you to 10,000 threads here from people all expecting to be able to extract data from their posts into pages.

Because they all don’t understand how WP works. 99% of those cases are here because they want to have the category archives in the top/horizontal menu – which is usually made up by using the wp_list_pages template tag.

So, it is NOT that they want some kind of special Page with custom Loop… they just don’t realize it would be easier to edit the menu than to ask the wrong question.

I’d rather see some admin-side facility that lets you edit the menu. There is no real need to display posts on Pages.

the only need is the logical one… or the permalink one… but I don’t see it as a costly exercise to offer that feature – and if it were there, I’d use it myself.

I’d prefer myblog.com/news instead of myblog.com/category/news anyday…. and if I could have the full content on /news and maintain the excerpts only on /category/news that would be even better.

a custom loop builder for pages would be really excellent for a lot of people… but I can see why you don’t agree — I’m pretty good at making templates by now too… I just shouldn’t have to be.

Is it really easier to keep telling people that they simply don’t understand something which is actually pretty confusing terminology – or is it easier to just make it so they don’t need to understand?

“So, it is NOT that they want some kind of special Page with custom Loop”

I agree, and it’s also NOT that they want to remodel their category-based archives either. All they want is a result – and either option gives them one, be it in a page template, or a category template.

It would just be nice if ‘pages’ were the feature in wordpress which allowed you to expand your blog’s functionality. As it stands right now, pages are the most useless feature.

I want to add… this condition is also exacerbated by all these themes which offer tabs in the header, which lead you to pages.

… except pages are useless, and what they should be doing is leading to categories.

… except people usually want more categories than 5 or 6….

so we’re back to tabs of useless pages – instead of just making it so those pages can actually be functional areas of your website.

This is the first time I post here. I don’t usually post in forums at all, but now I been trying to solve this issue the whole day yesterday and today. As minute44 mention, the most common problem on these forums is when people don’t understand the concept of posts and pages. The problem is it is not easy to understand. Let say you want to create the following website:

    Parent.1
    child 1.1
    child 1.2
    Parent.2
    child 2.1
    child 2.2
    Parent.3

All the children are linking to different post categories and Parent.3 is a static page (let say a contact form). Is it possible to make a dynamic site like this in Word press? The site I’m building are quite large and this is just an example illustrating the problems with the post/page structure. Started building this using categories but it seems it is not possible to highlight menu items dynamically using them? How to get different pages load different categories(posts). Hope you can understand my problem. My English is not so good.

if you want to load posts into pages, you can do so via Page Templates.

    the following links should help:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Pages#Page_Templates
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/query_posts

however, it is possible to do this via categories and have dynamic navigation which highlights the current category view.

just like wp_list_pages, wp_list_categories issues a class to the currently active category. Use ‘current-cat’ in your css to highlight it.
