The first thing that comes to mind is a PHP error.
Try looking at error log to see if it helps. If any message suspicous, post it here!
This just started today for me as well. Links I have to other pages (such as new post) work, but the dashboard never successfully loads. After what seems like a few min’s, Firefox offers to download the wp-admin\index.php file.
The file is empty when opened.
My host is Yahoo and everything seemed fine before today.
I don’t have that much experience with webservers and php but if anyone has any suggestions that I can try, I’m all ears.

After playing around for hours tonight trying to figure what’s going one, 30 seconds after posting here everything seems to be working fine.
All I did different was click on “Plugins” from the write/new post page and then click on Dashboard.
And this time it worked… 😕
It is giving me the same problems, I have no idea what is going on and I am searching, it happens when I activate plugins and the dashboard goes away, I click on certain links and it goes away. It was working fine earlier and the day before what is going on now?
I have same problem, but partially solved…
I clicked “Edit” link by every dashboard widget and than I clicked “Save” on following page and widget started working ….
Only widget “Plugins” doesnt have this link so it is still not working…
