people can still self-register ok, but only to the basic level.
I have about 700 users at user level 2 (I promoted them one by one) and about 40 registered who can only post comments.
Now when I try to promote newly registered users the address bar says eg
/wp-admin/users.php?action=promote&id=321&prom=up
but I get a blank page, with no error messages.
Any help gratefully recieved.

I've found that I can upgrade users by accessing the mysql database directly.
What can be deduced from this...
1. the database must be working ok.
2. the page users.php is not passing along the instructions to the database.
3. Users.php has not changed (dont see how it could have).
4. The only thing that has changed since it worked ok is the total number of users (and the date obviously).
