• For some reason I have been unable to update or install anything using the wordpress admin screen. I had this problem for a while now, and hoped updating WP would solve everything. But it didn’t.

I have quite a few WordPress websites running, and I never had this problem.

On the form I can only select if I want to connect using FTP or FTPS (SSL). The other field are selectable, but I can’t change anything in them. I can change the credentials using the config file, and it does show them correctly, but it still can’t connect. And no, I did enter them correctly and even changed them a few times. Connecting with random FTP software is working fine as well.

So now I’m unable to update or install plugins or WordPress updates. I haven’t tried the auto-updater since I skipped version 3.7 and went from 3.6 to 3.7.1 directly, but I don’t think it’s going to work either.

    Help please. 🙁

  • It sounds like you’re dealing with a permissions issue with WordPress files. This likely has to do with your hosting. You can read more about file permissions at http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions.

It’s a little technical, but I’d recommend learning what you can then reaching out to your hosting company for help. They’ll be able to adjust the permissions and file ownership for you.

Last, it will also be helpful to search on Google for something like “wordpress have to enter ftp credentials”. I was able to find a ton of other people dealing with the same issue.

    Good luck.

Hmm… rather strange. I thought I had all the file permissions correct. I just changed every folder to 775 and file to 644, and now it seems to work. Not sure where that went wrong before. :\

Also, because I could not even change the fields containing my ftp host, user or pass, I thought it was something else.

Anyway, thanks for helping. I feel stupid now. :)!

Don’t worry about it at all. I’m glad you got it working.
