Firstly, I thought this question was better suited here than in the themes section as it isn’t really about a specific theme. Secondly, sorry in advance for what is probably a very noob question.

Ok, so I’m wanting to up-date my WordPress site’s theme. The one I have at the moment is feeling a little cluttered and I’d like a change. However, I don’t want to interrupt the live site but I do want to be able to test any new themes before settling on them to ensure they are working. My question is, what is the best way to do this? Should the site be re-created offline on my PC so I can test it or is there a way of doing it on-line without affecting the current site? If so, how does one go about it (off- or on-line)?

Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Cheers.

Moving to “Your WordPress” sub-forum. It’s the best place to get feedback for your WordPress site.

Actually Jan, it says support requests shouldn’t be put in the YourWordpress forum. As this is a support request can it be moves back?

Moved back to HowTo & Troubleshooting. May we should rename this “The Great Migratory Topic”? 😉

Do you want to just test out a few new themes on your site? Because there are plugins for that – like http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/theme-test-drive/

A more complex option would be to install WordPress locally, import the content of your live site to your local one (via Tools -> Export/Import) and carry out your testing locally.

The third option would be to carry out a second install of WordPress in a sub-folder, again import the content of your old site to your new one, re-arrange you content to suit your new theme and then take the old site down. When you are ready, take the old site down by deleting all files in the root folder & re-configuring the new site to take over the root domain. The changeover should take less than 10 minutes and, afterwards, you can clean up the bits left from the old install at your leisure

I’ve just got an idea for a new blog post title! Thanks!

It’d be a complete overhaul of the theme/ layout, so some testing would occurs but I’d probably customize the chosen theme somewhat to get it just so.

The last option sounds like the best. Thanks for the help esmi. Any further help with setting that up I’ll put into a new topic.
