Strip category base for categories with Chinese characters causes 404

    I have some categories with Chinese characters in them. When I select “Strip the category base (usually /category/) from the category URL.” from Permalink Settings, going to a category archive with Chinese characters throws a 404. Categories with a-z or numbers work fine. If I uncheck Strip, the Chinese categories work.

    This is only if I enter the link in the address bar. If I click on the link in post meta, or in the categories widget, it works. i.e. if I copy-paste the working link to the address field it no longer works, so it’s not me entering something incorrect.

    Also if I uncheck Strip and strip /category/ in htaccess the problem is the same.

    Any ideas what’s going on?
