Sometimes. A lot of the time it just says 3.8-alpha
Thanks Ipstenu,
I do have 3.8 alpha, and all my automatic updates are set to fly. I just keep getting email notifications of updates; but no indications that anything has actually changed.
(Thought version numbers would make me feel more secure.)
I know what you mean 😀
They should start applying versions after Monday. We’re between cycles till then.
Right now, if you go into wp-includes/version.php you’ll see this:
$wp_version = '3.8-alpha';
So how do you know you’re on nightly? Good question!
Ipstenu,
I received an email notice this morning that my site had been updated to 3.8-alpha (no version number included). I then went to the FTP file manager on my hosting service and found the following:
/**
* Holds the WordPress DB revision, increments when changes are made to the WordPress DB schema.
*
* @global int $wp_db_version
*/
$wp_db_version = 25824;
So from what I can gather, my site hasn’t really been updated since db version #25824. Core just broke the 26000 mark. What gives? Is that alpha nightly builds have not actually been offered yet, OR do I have some sort of code glitch that won’t allow the update to complete its process?

Revision number and $wp_db_version
are not the same. The latter is still 25824:
