    That did it. Turns out the free Sucuri scanning and security plugin was the culprit. The “1-Click Hardening” option to “restrict wp-content access” tweaked the permission in the content .htaccess file. After reverting everything seems to be ok now. You should list this plugin in the known issues documentation if it exists. Sucks. You tune up the security too much and you loose functionality. Hackers……
