Support » Fixing WordPress » Auto Upgrade for Plugins asks for FTP Login? WP2.5

I upgraded to 2.5 and when I click on the auto-upgrade link for the plugin I am directed to a page asking for my FTP login information… thing is when I put in the correct information, even THAT doesn’t work.

I get word from other upgraders that their installs never asked for this info… what’s up?

Depending on your server setup, the Auto Upgrade may ask for FTP details.

If your host is running suPHP, Or another simialr product, then FTP details are never asked for, as WordPress can modify the plugin files directly with ease.

However, If it cannot modify the plugin files, It’ll request FTP details to connect to perform the upgrade.

What is the error message when you give it the FTP Details and it doesnt work?

If you could, Can you install this plugin: http://dd32.id.au/files/wp-filesystem-tester.zip Activate it, And send me the details from the debug page it creates to my email? wordpress@dd32.id.au I’ll have a look into it and see if i can work out what the issue is.

The error I get, is like my FTP settings I type in aren’t right… but they’re identical to the ones I use to login via FTP.

Error: There was an error connecting to the server, Please verify the settings are correct.

Weird… I installed your FS Tester thing, and the identical settings worked… I can now upgrade plugins with no issue.

After putting in my credentials it does download, but then hangs on “Unpacking the update”.

Anybody know whats up with that…

Just wondering. I hear about this plugin auto upgrade here and there, but I have three 2.5 sites, but… where is the plugin auto upgrade? Is it that weird plugin widget on the dashboard that loads for five minutes and then turns blank (did something happen when it does?) or should I look at the plugins page?

Yes, it is on the Plugins page.
For the plugins hosted here (see Extend etc.) – if there is a newer version, there will be a line under the plugin alerting you about it, and offering two links:
    – download or
    – update automaticaly.

That’s the same as before, but can it be turned off? I’m sure I don’t have the latest Ask Apache for example (couldn’t get it to work properly), but the admin panel doesn’t say a thing.
And, what does the plugin widget on the dashboard do, other than slowing things down enormously (it loads for a few minutes and goes blank and only then can I use the admin again)? Should it produce a list with new plugins or so?

Error: There was an error connecting to the server, Please verify the settings are correct.

When I’m tryng to use the same details that I use to login to my ftp account it has given the above error message!

your plugin returns the following error

I had the same problem using the “public” name for my FTP server. Changing it to localhost took care of the problem.

I wasn’t having any luck with this, until I changed the permissions on the wordpress files to be owned by/writeable by the webserver. Then it’s all about the one-button upgrade.

What is the specific filepath to put in for the field – “Hostname”? I’m getting this FTP log in request as well, when I want to upgrade my plugins.

    Also, is it safe?

    “Also, is it safe?”

I don’t believe it’s ever safe to give anyone your passwords for anything. I don’t care if you worship the wordpress guys, I still wouldn’t do it…

As soon as you give away your password, all the accountability goes away. Everything that happens from then on becomes your fault automatically.

I don’t believe the upgrade feature should even offer the option. If it can’t do it without your FTP details, it should fail and make you upgrade normally.

Most users don’t care about handing over their ftp logins, but responsible computing dictates that we shouldn’t ask for it, even if people don’t mind giving it away.

A nice little error message like “I’m sorry, the automatic upgrade cannot be performed. Please contact your host to enable suPHP.” is informative and puts the onus on the host, where it belongs.

I have multiple wordpress 2.5.1 editions saved on the same server, but only one of the wordpress auto update feature does not work. I am not sure what settings are different, so for those who can not get it to work there is hope.

I think it has to do with folder permissions or the .htaccess file.

Did anyone get closer to solving the problem?

i have the same problem i have 2 copies of wp 1 working find but the other one is not

NOTOK-WP = in it own dir (vhost diffrent domain)

I’m having a similar problem. I get the following when I run WP FS Tester
