Have you tried:
– deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
– switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.
– resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.
I should have written I can’t leave my site without plugins (it didn’t fix the problem anyway!)
There is no magic bullet in these situations. This is just the start of basic troubleshooting and is a process of elimination deliberately designed to locate the root cause as quickly as possible by first removing the most obvious and common culprits via a series of (often) temporary steps.

Your theme & plugin settings are saved in your database and should be retained for future use.
I understand that and I really appreciate the help! I actually wrote the second message immediately after my first but it posted later and looked like a response to your post which it wasn’t intended to be.
I deactivated all the plugins and it didn’t help.
I reactivated them and switched to the default theme and found that code was showing up on BOTH my desktop and my mobile device. I don’t know what this tells me about the problem?
So I have reactivated my original theme.
I am working on your third suggestion but I am stil trying to figure out how to do it!
