OK, after 4 hours of trying, I’m giving up and posting here. I’ve seen a related topic on this but it went unresolved.

    My problem is this:

I’m trying to use the Feedburner plugin but it won’t acknowledge my feed because I have invalid characters (UTF-8 errors) for the RSS feed.

After much too much searching, I gather that this is because I use Word as my editor and then use the “post from word” feature in WordPress management.

On the google forums, they basically said I need go put everything in Notepad and then re-upload it. Are you kidding me? There must be an easier way. I have hyperlinks, bolds, and underlines all over the place.

And, its hard to know exactly where the problems are. The feedback validator gives info such as this:

column 31: ‘utf8’ codec can’t decode bytes in position 7791-7792: invalid data (maybe a high-bit character?) [help]

…blah, blah, blah.

There must be some workaround. Reuploading and editing everything will take forever!

And one other question? What is the recommended way to create/edit content to avoid this problem? I don’t want to use notepad for editing (no hyperlinks and horrible to look at) and I like to create content offline.

Please, please someone out there in WordPress land shed some light on this issue for me.

    Thanks a bunch in advance,
    Richard

Well, I didn’t get a response on this but it’s ok. I solved the problem and, since everyone on this site has been so helpful, I have pledged to always put my solution in the ticket if I have one. There is nothing more irritating than seeing someone with the exact same problem and then the ticket is closed with a “solved it.”

I’m writing a blog about what happened and the length of time that it took but I am going to post the quick and dirty here.

I downloaded a plug-in that claimed it fixes all UTF-8 data problems on the entire site. I thought this was the Holy Grail. Turns out it wasn’t at all. The plug-in itself caused Feedburner validation errors.

I then resolved to do it manually. The quickest way to do this is to go to the WordPress Manager Write tab, click the code choice, copy everything there, paste it Notepad, delete everything back in the word press code area (only in the body section, don’t create another document or you’ll probably change your Permalink!), then copy everything from Notepad back into the code area.

That’s it. Fixed all my problems.

AND, even better, I only had to do it on two articles…I thought I would have to do it on all of them. As I think about it, the “post from word” feature might work after all…maybe I forgot to use it the first couple of posts.

Which is great because for some reason I’m extremely accustomed to create in Word and did not want to change.

Anyway, I was so happy to have this fixed. Now people can subscribe to me here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/LiveYourWay

    Hope this is helpful, Thanks,
    Richard
