Is wordpress good for creating an immortal social network?

    hello
    I am going to create a custome social network for a region and one special goal.
    Are the wordpress and buddypress system good for this?
    I mean after 1-2 year and growing of this site and if I decide to change and upgrade some parts of it
    Will appropriate,too?
    please help if you know or have experience.
