merging 'car' into 'cars' tag causes 404 at 'car' tag?

Another way of asking is: if I merge ‘tag A’ into ‘tag B’ does a 404 always result for ‘tag A’? I used your plugin to merge some of my tags but now google webmaster tools is listing every change I made as a 404 crawl error. Is there a solution to this?
