• I can’t get the NextGen Gallery V2 imagebrowser to click through to the next image when I’m use the “post name” permalink settings in WordPress. However, the good news is, when I switch the permalink settings to the WordPress permalink default the imagebrowser works.

I’ve trawled through the support forum and most answers relate to NextGen Gallery settings prior to V2. I’ve also cleared the cache using the button in NextGen Gallery/Other Options/Miscellaneous section and the slug is set at nggallery. I’ve also deleted the imagebrowser and re-done it again using the new settings. Nothing has worked yet, except of the fact that the imagebrowser works with the “default” permalink setting.

My question: Is it possible for the NextGen Gallery imagebrowser to work using the “post name” permalink setting? If you’ve had this problem and resolved it please share. Your solution will make me smile!

  • I have exactly the same unresolved problem.

I’m also using “post name” permalink setting in WordPress and tried to clear cache, change “nggallery”, etc to use imagebrowser effect in my Thumbnails gallery. Nothing helps, although I can see the correct URLs in the browser withh the latest NextGen version 2.0.31, but the images don’t show up in normal size – just the same page with the same thumbnails every time.

So, I switched back to “Fancy Box” effect, which is very bad in terms of SEO tracking. This is the major problem for me with this new (2.XXX) version of NextGen. Previous version works perfectly fine with that.

    Are there any ideas, please?

Maybe, I should mention clearly the Web address of my site with this problem? Here is the sample thumbnail gallery (language doesn’t matter, I hope): http://sergeyorlov.me/gallery/freediving/

I’ve just sent a note to NextGen via their bugs page, asking the question about Permalinks not working with the NextGen Gallery Browser.
    http://www.nextgen-gallery.com/report-bug/

    Great, thank you, cynthiablue44.

Could you, please, share the link to the bugs page (or additional information, if you will have it)?

    Thanks a lot!

Hello! I’m currently in backward and forward email communications with NextGen re the permalink problem. They’ve been very quick to respond. I’ve sent them details of how the permalinks work when set at the WordPress default for permalinks, and how they don’t work when the permalinks are set to Post Name. I’ve also provided them with all the settings. I’ll return to this thread if the NextGen support person finds a solution.

    Hey Cynthia,
i’m also having serious trouble with the URL’s not being rewritten correctly as well.
I’ve had multiple developers search for a solution, but seem not to be able to define a custom URL string / permalink structure.

Could you please keep us posted on your progress? Many thanks!

Update: NextGen Support have asked me to deactivate my plugins (excluding NextGen) to find out if one of the plugins is causing the problem with the WordPress permalinks set at “post name”. I hate deactivating plugins because all sorts of things can get lost. Luckily, I’m the webmaster for several websites and one of them doesn’t have the NextGen Gallery plugin. So I’ve decided to test out this theory on my website that currently is not using the NextGen Gallery plugin and has a limited number of active plugins. I’ll come back to this thread once I’ve completed my testing to let you know the results.

Listed below are the websites I will use for resolving the permalinks problem:
http://artuccino.com/Allan_Cunningham_Botanist_1839/index.php/articles-gallery/ (On this webpage I’m using the NextGen Basic Slideshow – I would prefer the image browser on this page because it shows the captions and the “next” button.)

http://johnwellsmurals.com.au/index.php/gallery/ (On this website, I’m using the NextGen Thumbnail Gallery. I’ve tested the Basic Image Browsers on this website and the permalink problem occurred.)

http://artuccino.com/ (On this website, currently, the NextGen plugin has not been uploaded. I will be uploading it later today.)

I’m sure the solution will be worth waiting for. I’m a great fan of the NextGen plugin and I’m very impressed with the support they’ve supplied with several issues I’ve encountered during their teething problems with version 2.

    Wish me luck.

Update: I’ve done my testing without a resolution. I’ve written to NextGen Support to let them know that their suggestion hasn’t worked. This is what I wrote to them today:

I’ve tested uploading NextGen Gallery to a completely different website, to see if a “clean” upload would work. I had the same result as described in my earlier emails and the PDF I sent you.

I’ve done a search on the internet and found that the problem I have is not a new one. It existed prior to version 2. I found an excellent explanation for the problem on benkaminski.com written in August 2012. However I was unable to find the “activate permalinks” that he referred to, also I think that the NextGen Plugin has probably been changed since he wrote his post. http://benkaminski.com/2012/08/18/nextgen-gallery-permalinks-the-missing-instructions/

Anyway I’ve decided to give up for the moment as I’ve run out of time.

I’ve got a thread about his problem going at http://wordpress.org/support/topic/nextgen-gallery-v2027-permalinks-problem-with-imagebrowser?replies=7#post-4795092

I’ll let them know on the thread that I was unable to solve the problem.

    Hello Cynthia.

Based on my experience, even if this problem was in the previous versions of NextGen (prior to 2), it could be successfully resolved by using the setting of NextGen you mentioned – something like “activate permalinks” or “recreate permalinks”. I used it sometimes when I changed the gallery structure significantly.

Since NextGen version 2 these setting is missed. So, maybe, the most “bruteforce” way of resolving our problem is for NextGen team to recreate this setting again in version 2.

Anyway, thank you for your efforts 🙂

    – Cais.

    Hi everybody,

Well, I finally found the reason of permalink problems at least in my case. If you will follow, for example, that gallery http://sergeyorlov.me/kollektsii/tibet-2012/, you will see that after clicking thumbs the ImageBrowser will be opened.

The reason (once again, in my case) was the additional plugin “Cyr-To-Lat” (http://wordpress.org/plugins/cyr2lat/), whose purpose is to “converts Cyrillic characters in post, page and term slugs to Latin characters”. I used it for years, and when I remembered it works with URL’s, I disabled it and resolved the permalink problem.

Nevertheless, it seems unclear for me how the previous versions of NextGen were able to deal with that working plugin… Anyway, if you will check the list of the plugins of your site, maybe, you will find something similar – than try to disable it.

Thank you serg269 for sharing. I’m so pleased you resolved your problem. NextGen suggested disabling plugins. I’ll certainly have another serious look at the plugins I’m using. I’ll come back to this thread if I discover if a plugin is causing my problem.
