I have contacted my ISP/server of my domain and they are running...

"We are running PHP 4.41 (ok) and mysql 3.23.58"

Will this work on the latest (not beta) WordPress?

Now, this isn't making any sense for the general populace using wordpress. Why are they (wordpress) too far ahead of everyone?

A thought... is there a back version available that will work on "mysql 3.23.58" or less or whatever (refer to previous stats) and what would that version be?

Have you come up with a solution?

I have a client who is on a really poor host. And for some reason doesn't want to switch. This severely limits development options because his budget is also small and so he can't afford too much custom programming.

If you work for paying clients - do your homework:

Well, I didn't want to use the legacy code. My client still wanted the features of a newer version, but not the price for me to extend the older version.

So, I successfully convinced my client to upgrade to a better hosting account. And now we're both happy. He has his site at a reasonable price, and I have my sanity. :-)

They're not. MySQL 3.23.58 was released over 4 years ago (September 2003). Nobody supports 4+ year old code. Even MySQL itself dropped support for the version 3 codebase in December 2006, and they'll probably be dropping support for version 4 this year, sometime. PHP 4 is dying much slower, but it is dying with many software packages going PHP 5 exclusively.

You cannot run old code forever. Things change, servers must be patched. If your host won't run the latest code, get a new host.
