I’ve done that successfully.
What do I do next?

I’d like to take out the beige bit that says Leave a Reply/You must be logged in to post a comment.

Try adding this to your child theme style.css file – after the @import line:
.comment-respond {
display: none;
}
Positively brilliant and thank you.
If I want to alter the <h1> size, for example, or use a particular font for it, in which style sheet do I do that?

You only ADD CSS to the child theme style.css file – when done correctly, that CSS will override the existing CSS. Generally, the best way to work with CSS is to use a browser tool like Firebug to look at the existing CSS for an element and then COPY that bit of CSS to the child theme and change it there.

I’ve just installed WordPress and Twenty Thirteen theme so am very new to it. I want to a website only without blogs, posts, comments, etc. How do I remove the whole area of Leave a Reply, Comment, Text Area and Post Comment with its different coloured background?
