Well, it seems that not only does one have to move the CalPress Events widget into the sidebar but also one has to select “Show upcoming events”. One would presume that putting the widget into the sidebar would automatically show the upcoming events, then one could use the rest of the check boxes to filter exactly which upcoming events are shown or use the other check boxes for other features. Seems a bit redundant to have to both put the widget in the sidebar AND select “Show upcoming events” when the whole purpose of putting the widget in the sidebar is to indeed show upcoming events.

I’d prefer the option to show a mini calendar or the upcoming events in the widget. If there is a choice between views, then the upcoming events checkbox makes sense.

Dianaascher, those are two different widgets you are describing – the Mini Calendar widget and the Upcoming Events widget. You don’t have a choice within one widget for those two views. Therefore, the checkbox does not make sense, since the purpose of the Upcoming Events widget is to actually show upcoming events. If you want a mini calendar, choose the mini calendar widget – for which, I must point out, one does not have to further select a “Show Mini Calendar” check box. Why? Because the reason one picks the widget is because one wants it to show in the sidebar!

stbedesantae – we have actually had this debate internally – we get requests for both widgets and have tried to combine the features – we are working on a re-design now to make this more understandable.

Thanks, Don. I would consider using both widgets as they provide two different functions, AND the different look (list versus grid) make them easily recognizable on the page. The Upcoming Events is used, of course, by someone checking what’s happening in the next few days – quick reminder not to miss something. The Mini Calendar is for planning on the longer term – what’s happening this month or, as is common in a church with liturgical seasons, what’s happening in Advent or Lent, which could span a couple of months. My input would be to keep them as 2 separate widgets so that each could be customized without affecting the other – a much more user-friendly format, in my opinion.
