Comment spam on non-existent posts

I don’t know whether this is peculiar to 1.3 or not, but someone has been leaving comment spam on posts that don’t exist on my weblog. The comments don’t seem to show up on the weblog itself, but I get notification emails and the comments are listed in wp-admin/edit-comments.php.
Is there any way to prevent this?
