Regular post archives would exclude any custom post types. Since the comics are a custom post type, they are excluded from archives by design.

I see that Sheri has answered you here:

As soon as we get that fixed we’ll let you know. Glad you found a workaround in the meantime.

Have you tried adding a link to the next comic in the Link field on the image? Click the image itself, then click the small “Edit image” icon that appears. In the modal popup window, add a link to the next image in the Link field:

Thanks for the quick response, I suppose adding manually would be a workaround however tedious and cumbersome it may be.

Actually the manually adding the link won’t work because the comic is a featured image isn’t it? Or am I doing it wrong – I couldn’t seem to just drag and drop like the instructions suggested.

I too would love it if it just went to the next comic when clicked as this has been brought up a couple of times by readers.

Hi lee-sargent – thanks for your questions. The comics custom post type doesn’t actually use featured images; they use regular images inserted into the post in the same way other images are – by clicking the Add Media button above the editing toolbar.

If you need any help adding an image and linking it to the next comic page, let me know. (Just a heads-up that there are a few error messages appearing at the moment when you publish a new comic and we’re working on getting those fixed up.)

I will find out if the drag-and-drop images option is something that works in the self-hosted version of Panel, or if that’s a WordPress.com-only feature, and will keep you posted here.

I hear what you’re saying and I understand why this might be useful for some people. One advantage of leaving it up to each site owner to decide what the image does when you click it, is that it leaves the theme a little more flexible. For example, some folks might want the clicked image to open to a larger version so that viewers can see in a more close-up view.

Hi there – the drag-and-drop feature is available for self-hosted sites using Panel. πŸ™‚ You need to drag-and-drop on the front end (public side) of your site, and the dashboard automatically opens up after the image is added, with a new Comics post ready for you to edit and save. I made a little video to show you how to do it:

Just let me know if you need any help with it.

Thanks Kathryn, the video actually helped a lot (I’m sure the simplicity is what led me astray!)

Excellent, glad to hear it helped!

Actually Kathryn I tried out the method and it was as I imagined – on the page it will display the comic twice – once as the featured image and once as the embedded comic strip – the solution is to obviously remove the embedded image thus disallowing the ability to put manual linking into it.

    Screenshot: here

To be honest I don’t feel strongly enough about the clicking image option to pursue it that much deeper – I might in the future take a look at one of the photo blogs that uses featured images and see what code they might use to make it possible.

Also I’m not ruling out user error in the set up – there might be a setting I’m unaware of that fixes the featured image doubling up issue.

Thanks very much for the screenshot – I see what you mean, I’m able to replicate this on my test site. It only seems to happen when using the drag-and-drop method on the front end, right? I’m going to report this to our developers and I’ll keep you posted.

Also, as a workaround, you could try removing the featured image, instead of the image within the post editor. That’ll still let you link it to whatever you like. πŸ™‚

I wanted to let you know that the glitch with displaying the comics archive page has been fixed in the latest version of Panel (1.0.2), which is now available for download from the right-hand column here:
    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/panel/

Your comics archive page should now be visible by adding /comic/ to the end of your main URL.

Just let me know if anyone has further trouble with it. Thanks!

lee-sargent – we’re still working on fixing the duplicate images that appear after drag-and-dropping, and I’ll keep you updated here.

lee-sargent – the issue with a duplicate image appearing when using the drag-and-drop method of adding comics will be fixed in the next version of Panel.

In the meantime, you can try adding this code to the theme’s functions.php file:

    http://pastebin.com/RSeT6hzh

Please let me know if you have any further trouble with the drag-and-drop method of adding comics to the front end of your site after adding this bit of code to functions.php. Thanks!

Howdy! Just a note to say this has been fixed for WordPress.com users, with a fix for the self-hosted version coming shortly.

When you use the easy upload functionality in Panel, both images will appear in the editor, but the one in the content area will be stripped out if it’s the same as the one that’s featured.

I hope this helps. Thanks again!

Panel 1.0.3 is now available for download:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/panel/

This version should prevent any duplicate images from appearing when you use the drag-and-drop upload technique.

Let us know if you have any problems with it. Thanks!
