• I have the Modularity Lite theme as a child theme for my website. Someone pointed out to me that this theme has not been updated in two years and that as I update WordPress I run the risk of my website not functioning properly.

I didn’t set the site up myself and I am not able to question the person who did. I’m not up to date on this matter, can anyone offer a solution. If I go for another theme will I have to change many more elements of the site. Ideally I want a quick solution but retain the site as it is now.

    Kind Regards

The no update in 2 years doesn’t always mean that the site will not function properly, it depends if theme use any function that really long out of date.

The author of this theme http://wordpress.org/themes/modularity-lite have just released a new theme here, so he is still active in WP community, hopefully there should be an update to this theme in the near future.

It’s hard to give absolute answer to this. It depends on many factors, but generally you can switch theme and move over important graphic design of the site. All WP content will remain the same, excepts some special content or functionality that’s specific to that theme.

Well can I test another theme and then if I don’t like it return to my old one.

You sure can switch theme back and forth.

Be careful not to mistakenly click delete old theme, just click “Activate” new theme, and it will automatically switch to it. Be aware that there are some settings like header image, widgets, that need to be reset each time.

There is also a plugin that allows admin to test out themes while users still see the old theme normally (please search for it in plugin repo, I’ve never used it personally though).

Thanks I’m receiving this whilst away from my main computer so I will try later, I don’t suppose you know which plugin tests the theme ?

This one I talked about, but again I never used it myself.

I looked at this plug in but it doesn’t say it will work for the latest version of WP. I can’t contact the creator because he states on his website that he can’t offer help for his free plugins. So if I load that up I run the risk of trashing my site.

    I’m scratching my head.

    Could you install WordPress locally?

Then if your site does break it will break on your machine and not the Web.

I’m afraid it’s too complicated for me, I’m going to have to find someone who understands WordPress and see if they can help.
Thanks for your time and patience.
