I must be missing the forest for the trees. I can't insert a PDF file directly into a post. I upload it (or any text file), use "link to post", and "link to page". All I get is the link to my PDF file.
I've even tried: <iframe> ... </iframe> and none of it seems to work.

That's how the web works. It is not WP. It is the nature of the .pdf file: it does NOT show in a browser - as your html files - but in the acrobat reader, which opens when you click on the link.
