OK, I followed the installation instructions and moved the unzipped folder to plugins but comment-sorter doesn't show up when I log in and go to the plugins control panel.
What am I missing?

Check the permissions of the plugin folder and its contents are set correctly. Compare the permissions with those of your other plugins.
jccurd,
I've had the same thing happen to me with other plugins when uploading from my Mac. You need to make sure that the plugin folder and enclosed files can be read by following Kalessin's instructions.
Kalessin and Ronalfy - thanks for trying to help. I've set "everything" authority on this plugin but still no joy. I've got other plugins working without the need for such intervention.
I'm suspicious about its directory structure since there is no PHP file immediately beneath its main directory.
Well, that'll be why it's not showing up then. I've just downloaded it and I've got comment-sorter.php and a bunch of other files and folders under the comment-sorter directory. Try downloading/unzipping it again.
