Temporarily using ugly urls (5 posts)

    Hi

I'm in a bit of a catch 22 with urls and my new Wordpress installation.

I want categories as the next level of url after the domain name.

The problem with that is that I can't move pages around and experiment with different categories and structures without breaking urls that I've linked to in other posts. And yet I don't think I'll find my ideal structure until I've added more posts/pages - which is very difficult to do when you can't be sure of what internal links you'll be using and how to link to other posts/pages.

I've noticed that even though I've set it to use my custom url structure, 'ugly' links to the same post still works (e.g by finding the post's number and adding it to the end of my domain name - /?p=123) when I click through the ugly url, the url that appears in the address bar is the pretty one (eg. catagory/pagename) and so I thought using ugly urls in links might be a good temporary solution.

Are there any drawbacks to this? My first thought is what will google see? the ugly url written in the post? the pretty on it lands on when going though the link? Will it see it as a redirect and not like it?

    many thanks

I don't know what G sees because I blog for people not machines. However, I know one thing for sure: no matter what kifn of URLs are you using, the default ("ugly") URLs always work. They will always be available for linking.

And just for the record, this will never happen without breaking your blog:
I want categories as the next level of url after the domain name.

    Many thanks.
I thought the 'ugly' ones would be permanent

    Really?
Reading here I knew that there'd be a problem with just the post name (Under the "Using only %postname%" section) But I thought having catagory/postname would be OK - It even shows the example http://example.com/category/post-name/ under the "mod_rewrite: "Pretty Permalinks" section

Well, we are talking about two [2] different things!

Sorry, if I misread it - so many uneducated WP users were asking that question, i.e. to have
    example.com/category-name
    instead of
    example.com/category/category-name
that I thought you were referring to that issues (when showing category archives).
[conf. your text: I want categories as the next level of url after the domain name.]
