    Not sure whether this is related to the upgrade but that's the only thing that's changed on my blog.

    After I upgraded my blog started to load painfully slow - to the point where you think it will time out -...just sits there not making it to the main page.

    I disabled all plugins, changed to default theme - nothing. I'm tailing the logs for that domain - also nothing weird. At first I thought it was the cronjob I setup to wget the wp-mail.php file however that's been turned off and all processes belonging to it that were still lingering around have also been killed.

    It's definitely not the server, since I have 10 other sites on it with blogs and they're all loading fine. Only difference to the other sites is: they're not updated yet. I guess I can upgrade another one and see if that also causes the blog to load slow and come back with my results.

    This latest upgrade (2.3.3) doesn't even let us know what the upgrade is for. For all we know, the upgrade does nothing more than fix a bug that allows the possibility someone might see draft versions of posts. I, for one, wouldn't even care about that, as even my drafts are profound.

    Honestly, if you cannot be bothered to read, how can you be bothered to write?

    1. Your reference to the draft bug, wasnt a bug, thats a security issue, and it was fixed in 2.3.2. They've moved on to 2.3.3. Furthermore, how can you possibly say that they dont tell you what it;s for:

    It's a FIVE file upgrade. It takes 2 minutes, 1 whole minute to unzip the files, (if youre intellectually challenged) and one minute to upload the files (if youre on a dialup). For fuck sake, what is the fricken problem with the whiners?

    Honest to God, its a wonder anyone develops free software with the attitudes of some people. You bitch if youre hacked, you bitch when youre told you MIGHT be hacked, and you bitch when youre told to change FIVE files.

    I really do pity Matt, et al, sometimes. No wonder they hardly read this forum.

    I helped a guy over the phone two nights ago, upgrade his blog from v2.1.x to 2.3.2.. hes hosted on bluehost. We followed, nearly verbatim, the extended upgrade instructions on the codex. He did ALL the work. He backed up his databse inside phpmyadmin. he backed up his blog site. He did it all...

    He didnt have an ftp client when we started, he barely knew how to use one once installed, and he managed to do an upgrade with NOT one single problem.

    He upgraded to 2.3.3 last night: he went to my site, he downloaded the zip with the 5 files, he unpacked it, and uploaded the changed files. It took him, maybe, 4 minutes.

    I emailed him after he was done last night, and said this:

    "You managed to do what 100 ppl cant seem to get, pat yourself on the back"

    This guy is still on aol, and he's a genius compared to some of you.

    Hello, after upgrading I´m not able to click ANY links in my "presentation"-area. I´m not able to edit ANY theme.

    After 2.3.3 upgrade, my web displays some text before header, i'm using WP-Multiflex3 theme:

    Well, I've tried everything I can think of, including deleting the header image from the theme file then reuploading it to the theme file again. It's showing exactly as it did before, but just not being recognized for some reason. I did get the sidebar image to come back by deleting it and then re-adding it. Unfortunately that did not work for the header image. However, I've discovered that the image will come up in IE but not in Firefox.

    whooami - it was not showing in my Firefox until I deleted the image again, refreshed then put the image again back into the theme file. Now, it is working for both. I still don't understand what happened as far as why it quit appearing in Firefox but that seems to have resolved it.

    Thanks for your time and I've learned something new, when at first you don't figure it out delete and upload again.

    Whoa, whooami, talk about a big bucket of cold water on the warm feelings I have for WordPress.

    In my post, I offered a friendly suggestion, and noted it as such: if there is a choice between more and less frequent upgrades, I opt for the latter—or, perhaps, there could be the option of turning off the "upgrade available" notices if the upgrade isn't something we feel we need.

    Does that warrant being cursed out by you?

    I know that the upgrade to prevent someone reading one's drafts was 2.3.2. and not 2.3.3. That's why I used that example. It spoke to my point and, I thought, was obviously tongue-in-cheek. (I acknowledge, however, that I did refer to the "security issue" as a "bug," and I will try very hard from here on out never to use the term "bug" to describe a "security issue" again.)

    When I click on the "upgrade available" link in my control panel, it takes me to the WP download page, which does NOT contain any sort of information describing what, in fact, this latest upgrade actually does.

    Perhaps others are born knowing that,

    But I was hardly "whining." As I said, in my post, "In any case, WordPress is not only awesome, it's free, so please take this only as a friendly suggestion, and thanks for a great product and all y'all's hard work."

    Incidentally, I have no problem ftp-ing files between any of the dozen or so domains I run sites on, I haven't used AOL since 1997, and I actually leave in WordPress links and attributions where I use it.

    That you would even say that, proves whatever point I was making, since I mimic'd it in this thread, the thread you saw fit to add to, the thread you didnt read apparently, before adding to, or you would have seen my mimic.

    Further to that, whatever you might think about MY reply, I dont and have never have represented WordPress, I represent myself -- someone that spends a LOT of time here helping people that dont read or cant read, people like you that register, leave, and come back 2 months later to post, people that dont bother to look at their dashboard, and dont read the links at the top of E V E R Y page on this site.

    Its a thankless hobby, I assure you.

    For future reference, on your main WordPress dashboard page (yes, on your own site), you'll find a section that says "WordPress Development Blog". This links to all relevant information about WordPress and its development. It is always up-to-date.

    The current item at the top of that list is as follows:

    WordPress 2.3.3 — 3 days ago
    WordPress 2.3.3 is an urgent security release. If you have registration enabled a flaw was found in the XML-RPC implementation such that a specially crafted request would allow a user to edit posts of other users on that blog. In addition to fixing this security flaw, 2.3.3 fixes a few minor bugs. [...]

    Check there next time, any relevant information will be right there on your main dashboard page.

    going back to wackedmarketers question (top of page 2) about load times... I have discovered that my site (www.jenleheny.com) is loading very slowly and I'm not sure what is causing it. I doubt it is this upgrade but I thought I would check so that I can look at other things instead and work it out.

    Are any of you having issues with using $_SESSIONS with this upgrade? It seems that my Wordpress pages can write to them okay. I have some external php scripts that also write to them. They seem to write to them successfully. But then when I open the next word press page, the session variables written by the php are now empty.

    My website was working 2 weeks ago without any problems.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    skeezicks -- you can upgrade directly but you can't use the five file method to do so because they're not the only files that changed between 2.3.2 and 2.3.3.

    And thanks, Whoo, for the list of changed files. That saved a lot of time and I'd suggest that in future that information should be available upfront on the upgrade page.

    Hi, I just installed a clean 2.3.3 WP and upon logging into the admin ui, I see a "your wordpress is outdated, please upgrade" link. What's wrong? Thanks for your help!

    Having the same problem as JenRed and wackedmarketers, everything seems verrryy slow. By slow I mean, it takes 10+ seconds before the page actually starts loading/rendering.

    Wonder if anyone can give me some advice on the following.

    I have twice now done a full upgrade from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3 (I need the practice and am a masochist...but to be honest, I only just came across this thread and the fact that only 5 files have been changed from 2.3.2).

    On both occasions, I have gone to the upgrade page to be told that I am already upgraded and running the latest version of WP. Then I check on my Dashboard page, and 2.3.2 still appears as my version, AND at the top of the page is the notice telling me about 2.3.3 and urging me to upgrade! What the...?

    Both times, I DEFINITELY downloaded the current 2.3.2 upgrade (I have checked that!).

    I'll try uploading just those 5 changed files, but before I do, could someone suggest an explanation for what is going on here pls?

    Also, re the 5 changed files: do I simply upload them to my WP general folder via FTP, or do I have to specifically overwrite previous files? Probably a duh-brain question, but I am not very tech-savvy.

    the fact that you have to ask that suggests the answer to your problem.

    If you read the codex, it tells you to delete files. It then tells you to upload files.

    Overwriting suggests that you are not deleting files.

    People around here are not good at overwriting files.

    Which is why the codex reads the way it does (delete).

    The reason why you are still seeing what you are seeing in the admin area is because you too, are not good at overwriting files, or your wp-includes/version.php would be changed-- THAT and that file alone is responsible for the message you are seeing.

    Since we know you didnt "overwrite" that file, its safe to assume you might have missed others. In which case, you pro'lly ought to start over. If this is just an upgrade from 2.3.2 -- then yes, you are safe with just the 5 files, but delete first, then upload.

    If its an upgrade from something previous to 2.3.2 than you'll want to do the whole shibang.

    The Codex upgrade instructions (http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress) state the following: Copy the new files to your server, overwriting old files. You may use FTP or shell commands to do so.

    I have always carefully followed the Codex instructions. I can see nothing on the page I provided the link to above that instructs us to delete files, as you claim.

    Not saying it's not there somewhere, but I can't see it. Are you sure you've got this right? I overwrote as per the Codex instructions when doing my previous upgrade from 2.1 to 2.3.2 and had no issues.

    Whatever, I'll try downloading those 5 files and installing them and see what happens.

    I reckon it depends on which one you follow. :)

    If you actually overwrote, then it would be overwritten, yes? Well, the fact that you're still getting the upgrade message suggests that it's not been overwritten. So somehow, you did something wrong.

    Since you can't seem to overwrite for whatever reason (and we have no idea why), we suggest deletion followed by uploading the new versions. Be *sure* that your files make it to your server. When you see an older version on the admin pages, you know that the files did not make it there. It's as simple as that, really.

    Otto42, I checked my version.php and it says

    $wp_version = '2.3.3';
    $wp_db_version = 6124;

    and I'm still being told that my WP 2.3.3 is outdated and I need to upgrade. This was a clean install on a new server.
