  • Hello…

I have never bought a theme before…I want to buy a premium theme and test it on one domain….then delete it and use it on a second domain…the main one I am buying it for….I am broke so cannot afford to mess this up….I only want to use it once…but I want to test it first….do these premium themes on themeforest require authentication or is the download .zip file mine to do with as I please….I wouldn’t but as an example…could I use it five times…

I e-mailed the envato or whatever but they never answered me…

    Thanks for any help….

You need to ask the people who are selling you the product, WordPress.org has no affiliation with them. Also note that ThemeForest is not within the list of trusted commercial vendors that WordPress.org recommends: http://wordpress.org/themes/commercial/ .

    THANK YOU!

This is awesome information. Do you know generally speaking if purchased themes become your property and if they are mostly on the honor system?

The problem with the trusted vendors is that the theme I am looking at is completely bad ass….I will however give your link serious consideration…and scan through them right now…

    thanks again…

    If I may inquire/intrude:

The word “trusted” has captured my attention in regard to the ThemeForest reference. Is there anything one could/should infer from that statement – beyond the fact that ThemeForest simply isn’t listed in Commercially Supported GPL Themes here in the Themes Directory – and if so why?

I ask because I’ve never seen the word “Trusted” associated with the Commercially Supported GPL Theme providers showcased on wordpress.org, and it leaves me with some questions.

Using “trusted” in reference to the post, “Only Download WordPress Themes From Trusted Sources” by Chip. I would assume theme vendors recommended by WordPress.org are classed as trusted. If they aren’t I shall stop using the word “trusted” and perhaps stop recommending commercial theme vendors from WordPress.org.

I think we’re probably concerned about the same issues here, but maybe just viewing them through opposite ends of the telescope. I was trying to be ambiguous enough not to offend or incite anyone but I think it just ended up masking my concern.

Great article by Chip Bennett, by the way. It does a great job of explaining why you shouldn’t download any old random free theme from the internet. I’ve used that as a reference myself before.

Using “trusted” in reference to the post

Not in reference to the post in general, but in your reference to Themeforest.

Also note that ThemeForest is not within the list of trusted commercial vendors that WordPress.org recommends:

As someone who has invested a substantial amount of time and money purchasing commercial WordPress themes and plugins from several developers who distribute through ThemeForest, this caught my attention. Unless I’m over thinking things here, (and I often do) you seem to be intimating two things:

    A) ThemeForest is an untrusted source

    B) ThemeForest is not listed in the Commercially Supported GPL Themes here in the Themes Directory because it’s not a trusted source

Is there a reason I should be concerned?

My interest was in attempting to tactfully elicit more information on your view of ThemeForest, and discover if there was anything more that I, as a consumer should be aware of.

If they aren’t I shall stop using the word “trusted” and perhaps stop recommending commercial theme vendors from WordPress.org.

No, of course not. I don’t believe there’s any reason that you should stop using the word “trusted”, nor that you should hesitate to direct anyone to the Commercially Supported GPL Theme providers showcased on wordpress.org. Sorry for the confusion. Thx!!

Just a couple of things to add:

    1) ThemeForest now offers a 100% GPL license, that their vendors may choose to use. If you wish to retain the software freedoms promoted by WordPress, then you should look for ThemeForest Themes sold under the “100% GPL” license, rather than the Regular Envato license.

    2) ThemeForest has made great strides in improving their quality guidelines. Their current iteration is remarkably in-line with the WPORG Theme Review Guidelines, though it will take some time for those new guidelines to propagate into their currently offered Themes.

I don’t consider “ThemeForest” to be a dirty word; you just have to know what you’re getting in to, and what to look for.

Thanks for all the insight (incite) lol…

It is so great that everyone on this thread gave so much of their time and it was very helpful and informative.

I wound up taking a chance and buying something from Themeforest….I am going to take the time to look through all the files for malicious code and having one of the top guys (really) in computer forensics as a friend doesn’t hurt…he is also going to build a Python app for me which is exciting to migrate data automatically…
